Netflix has just added a film hailed as ‘one of the best horror films of this century’ to its roster.
The movie, Pearl, now available for streaming, was first released in 2022. It tells the story of a young woman seeking fame to escape the solitude of her parents’ Texas farm.
However, her journey soon becomes marred by violent episodes that viewers have described as ‘morbidly dark’.
Mia Goth leads the cast, teaming up with director Ti West for the entire X film series. Pearl acts as the prequel to the trilogy, which includes the original slasher film, X, and its 2024 sequel, MaXXXine.
Each of West’s dramas has received acclaim from horror enthusiasts, with Pearl earning a 93% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Meanwhile, X secured a 94% rating, and MaXXXine achieved 72%, reports Surrey Live.

Goth’s performance is often highlighted as one of the franchise’s standout features, with many suggesting she deserved recognition from the Academy Awards. Filmmaker West echoed these sentiments following the release of Pearl.
Speaking to The Independent, he said: “In my opinion she deserved it [an Oscar], but at the same time, I don’t feel that it takes anything away from what she did. It would have just been a nice addition.” Despite missing out on Oscar recognition, audiences have been heaping praise on Mia Goth for her mesmerising take on the lead role in the movie since its release.

On Rotten Tomatoes, someone exclaimed: “Arguably the single greatest performance I’ve ever had the pleasure of watching. Mia Goth is sensational. Truly impactful performance.” Another commenter wrote: “Mia Goth gives an utterly gut wrenching and emotional performance which was snubbed by Oscars just like Toni Collette in Hereditary!”
A third reviewer enthused: “Pearl is a morbidly dark yet extraordinary character study with Mia Goth as the star!”
Meanwhile, another film enthusiast posted: “Even after being impressed by X and thus having my hopes raised I was still really struck with Pearl. This isn’t just a better movie than X but one of the top horror films of the past decade. I called this one of the best horror films of the past decade. Indeed, I’d put it on a short list of top scary movies this century.”
