The film received mix reviews at the time of its release
A film dubbed a ‘timeless masterpiece’ is on TV for free tonight. The psychological horror film is set to air on BBC Two at 10pm on Sunday, January 19.
The Shining, adapted from the Stephen King 1977 novel of the same name, follows a family who move to the isolated Overlook Hotel in Colorado. Dad Jack Torrance takes the job as its winter caretaker and moves there with wife his Wendy and their son Danny.
However, things soon take a dark turn as Jack becomes increasingly manic and Danny begins to witness terrifying visions. Although the film received mix reviews at the time of its release in 1980, it has since undergone a critical reevaluation and has an overall score of 83% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Although there are many memorable moments throughout the film, viewers may recognise the film for its famous scene when Jack places his face through smashed door and says ‘here’s Johnny’.
On Rotten Tomatoes, one viewer said: “Can’t ever shake off the effect this movie has on me and still fascinates me probably forever. One of the greatest films ever to be made that keep me hooked start to end!
“Jack Nicholson is perfect as Jack Torrance delivering an unnerving performance. From one scene to the next you will be stuck at the overlook hotel with Jack and his family and the bad energy of those that have passed on at the hotel to think about what was going on and wonder how they keep haunting. A lot to look forward to and make sure not to miss anything and be waiting for the crazy ending.”
A second viewer said: “An amazing film with beautiful visuals. It has a creepy atmosphere but isn’t very scary for a horror overall an amazing film.”
A third viewer added: “My favorite movie of all time. Excellent casting, horrifying imagery, creepy music, excellent plot, superb videography, and Kubrick’s way of scaring his viewers lead to nothing short of a masterpiece.”
