LOS ANGELES, Calif. — Steve-O, the 50-year-old stuntman and former MTV personality, debuted a striking new haircut on Instagram Thursday, courtesy of actor Mark Wahlberg. The bold look, which features a shaved middle section with hair left on the sides, was inspired by Wahlberg’s character in the upcoming thriller “Flight Risk.”
In a selfie shared with his 7.4 million followers, Steve-O — whose full name is Stephen Gilchrist Glover — wrote, ‘I got a rad haircut from @markwahlberg to match his character in “Flight Risk” (in theaters everywhere January 24).’ The post has since garnered over 130,000 likes.
During a podcast recording session for “Wild Ride,” Wahlberg, 53, shaved Steve-O’s head to resemble his character, Daryl Booth, a pilot and hitman. A video clip of the haircut shows Wahlberg, a Boston native, carefully shaving the center of Steve-O’s head. ‘I had to test it a couple of times,’ Wahlberg said of his own transformation into the character. ‘When I went home, my wife was terrified. The kids didn’t want to see me.’
Wahlberg praised Steve-O for committing to the dramatic look, saying, ‘I’m so impressed because I wanted to do the haircut for real. I don’t want to sit in that makeup chair putting on a wig and a bald cap and all the s**t.’ He added, ‘I know a lot of guys who are bald and always embraced it — my dad, for one.’
Earlier this month, Wahlberg shared a behind-the-scenes video of his own head being shaved for the role. ‘I’m a little worried, but it’s gonna come back,’ he joked to the camera. ‘Oh yeah. F**k you lookin at? …It’ll come off.’
In “Flight Risk,” Wahlberg plays a pilot tasked with transporting a U.S. Marshal to New York City. The film’s official website teases a suspenseful journey where ‘tensions soar and trust is tested, as not everyone on board is who they seem.’ Wahlberg told People, ‘There was no bald cap. I shaved the middle and left the horseshoe around the sides.’
Steve-O’s Instagram post also promoted the new episode of his podcast, writing, ‘We sat down to record today’s new episode of @wildride (link in bio). Talk about a @wildride!’ He added, ‘Check out @flightriskmovie. Keeping it real, no bald cap. NO CAP.’
