Donald Trump will be sworn in for an historic second term as the 47th president of the United States on Monday. The 60th Presidential Inauguration is not among the 12 federal holidays scheduled for 2025 but most government agencies and businesses will be closed for the day for other reasons.
By coincidence, Monday January 20th overlaps with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, which has been celebrated every year on the third Monday in January since 1986 and is a federal holiday.
Such a scenario has only occurred three times in the past. Inauguration Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day coincided when Bill Clinton was sworn in on Monday, January 20 1997.
It was similar but not exactly the same in 1985, with Ronald Reagan and again in 2013 for Barack Obama’s second term as on both occasions, the 20th fell on a Sunday, leaving the Monday free to celebrate Dr. King’s birthday.
What businesses will be closed on Inauguration Day?
Most banks will be closed. Bank of America, Capital One, Citibank, PNC, Wells Fargo and Truist will not be open to respect the federal holiday.
All federal and state courts will stay closed on Monday – as will post offices. The USPS will not be delivering mail on MLK Day but some courier services such as FedEx will be operating as normal.
All non-essential government workers will have the day off. Public libraries, the DMV and city offices will be closed. As for other businesses, it will be left to the discretion of management if workers have to turn in or not.
There will be no trash collection in most US cities – service will resume on either Tuesday 21 or Wednesday 22.
Major chain stores including Target, Costco, Walmart, The Home Depot, Jewel-Osco and Mariano’s will be open on Monday.
