GRANDVIEW, Wash. – A fire early Wednesday morning in downtown Grandview has left a local business owner picking up the pieces after losing both her home and her business. The fire, which started in the early hours, destroyed Herby Hope, a shop that had been a staple in the community for more than 20 years.
Silvia Navarro, who owned the business, had a dream of creating a place where people could find natural remedies to improve their lives. Her son, Raymond Navarro, said his mother first opened Herby Hope in 1998, and she had been running it from its downtown location for more than two decades.
Raymond Navarro, Silvia’s son, said it was his mom’s dream to have a place where she was her own boss.
The fire broke out at approximately 6:30 a.m., and Silvia Navarro was initially unaware of the full extent of the damage. Her son rushed to her aid after receiving a call.
“She let me know she made it out of the building with just the top she had on,” Raymond Navarro said. “I went back in the house, grabbed some clothes for her, and made my way down to the police station where she was waiting, unfortunately watching her building burn down from down the street.”
Silvia Navarro, who was initially worried about her support dog, was later reunited with the animal at the Grandview Police Department. While devastated by the loss of her business, she expressed that her focus right now is on her personal loss, rather than her shop.
“I appreciate all the people that have called me because they are worried, but I don’t feel so much of the loss,” Silvia Navarro said through Apple Valley News Now’s Monique Ledesma, who translated the conversation from Spanish to English. “The only thing I feel is that I was left without a home, without a place to live, and all the people that would come and visit me at my shop.”
Since the fire, Raymond Navarro has opened his home to his mother, and other family members have helped her with daily needs. Unfortunately, her home, which was located behind her business, was also destroyed in the fire.
To help with her recovery, Raymond Navarro has started a GoFundMe campaign to assist his mother during this challenging time. To help, please click here to go to the GoFundMe page.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and a third-party investigator has been brought in to help determine what happened.
