Robbie Williams has revealed his interest in reprising his role as a chimp for a potential sequel to Better Man. The former Take That star, aged 50, believes there’s enough content for another film.
He shared: “There is so much that didn’t make the movie. Only because we couldn’t fit it in not because I was too embarrassed or ashamed to put it in… many stories. It would have had to be a five-hour film to fit everything in. And hopefully it does good and there is a Better Man 2.”
Better Man has grossed £10million worldwide, primarily in the UK. Despite not making a significant impact during its opening weekend in the US, up against Hollywood blockbusters like Gladiator II and Wicked, it received an 88% rating from critics and 94% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. Its song Forbidden Road was nominated for the Golden Globe’s best song.
Initially, Robbie was opposed to the idea of a CGI chimp playing the lead in the biopic. Speaking to Australian DJ Sean Brown, he said: “I am an actor. I’ve acted at being a pop star for the last 30-plus years. It is what I do.”
The biopic chronicles the life of Robbie, who grew up in Tunstall and Burslem, until 2003 the year he performed three massive gigs at Knebworth, one more than Oasis. Director Michael Gracey, who also directed The Greatest Showman, explained that a CGI chimp represents Robbie because he always “felt like a performing monkey”.
It delves into his struggles with addiction and mental health. His 12 year old daughter Teddy watched the film without her parents’ knowledge, but it hasn’t deterred her from pursuing a showbiz career, reports the Mirror.
Robbie shared: “She’s the child that wants to be famous the most – way more than I did. It’s terrifying. I tried to explain to her, ‘It doesn’t fix you’. But she won’t listen to me, of course. After the film, she was like, ‘Daddy, can I walk around the garden with you? ‘ And she held my hand and said, ‘I get it’.”
Robbie, known for hits like Angels and Rock DJ, has three other children with wife Ayda Field: Charlie, 10, Coco, six, and Beau, four.
Robbie’s Oscar hopes have been crushed after his song Forbidden Road was disqualified due to its similarity to another track. The song, initially shortlisted for Best Original Song, was deemed ineligible by Academy Award officials, who stated it “incorporates material from an existing song that was not written for the film”.
