The much-talked-about film, Punjab ’95, starring Diljit Dosanjh in the lead, has been at the centre of controversies ever since it was announced. After being delayed for over a year, the singer-actor announced on Tuesday that the film has been pushed once again due to unavoidable circumstances.
A heartbroken Diljit took to his Instagram stories to share a note which read, “We are sorry and it pains us to inform that the movie Punjab ’95 will not release on 7th Feb due to circumstances beyond our control.”
Producer Honey Trehan also posted the same note on his Instagram handle.
Diljit also shared a poignant quote by activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, on whom the film is based. “I pray to the Guru who identifies the truth, to keep this light lit,” the quote read.
A few days ago, Diljit had shared the trailer of Punjab ’95 on his social media handles and had announced that the film will released international on February 7. While the trailer is still available to be viewed on Youtube in other countries, it has been taken down from Youtube India.
For those unversed, Punjab ’95 has been stuck with the Censor Board of India for over a year now due to its alleged controversial depiction of Punjab Police. It tells the story of Jaswant Singh Khalra, known for his exposé on Punjab Police’s extra-judicial killings of Sikh youth in the late 90s. Khalra was later murdered in 1995.
Reportedly, the CBFC had proposed as many as 120 cuts in the film, but it is unknown if the makers complied to it. Punjab ’95 also stars Arjun Rampal in a key role. The makers are yet to announce the new release date of the film.
