‘Wild’: Meghan Markle’s team reportedly held talks on ‘post-divorce’ book deal

‘To Di For’ podcast host, Kinsey Schofield has joined Sky News host Danica De Giorgio to discuss recent bombshell reports about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in a Vanity Fair exposé.“I think that the biggest, biggest one for me is the idea that potentially Meghan Markle, according to Vanity Fair, a friend of hers was shopping around a book about what she would do post-divorce,” Ms Schofield said. “Now, I mean, that’s wild. The idea that somebody from her team would be shopping around to publishers a post-divorce book. That’s been one of the biggest takeaways.“If Harry and Meghan had an issue with the Hollywood reporter article, I cannot imagine how many dishes broke over the weekend in Montecito over this Vanity Fair.”

Clear your afternoon with the ‘Settle In’ collection at Gene Siskel Film Center

When looking for a great theater environment to discover a classic on the big screen, there’s few places better than the Gene Siskel Film Center.
Named after one of Chicago’s most respected film journalists, it’s only natural that the movies selected for screenings would come from a place of equal parts respect and passion for the craft.
As a repertory theater, a type of venue which regularly plays older films, curators at the Siskel choose movies to bring back to the big screen every month. Each set of movies follows a new theme and set of criteria — no two are alike, making every curation a surprise.
For the month of January, the theater rostered movies perfect for cozying up and spending an entire winter day in the warmth of the cinema. The “Settle In” collection brings together movies renowned for their extensive runtimes, with its shortest movie shown being 317 minutes.
Witness the work of documentarian Frederick Wiseman in his 358 minute “Near Death,” or Peter Watkins’ 873 minute “The Journey,” a story of nuclear pacifism that took 3 years to shoot.
If you managed to grab a ticket to the “Godfather” trilogy on January 11 – a 583 minute endeavor – you deserve a medal and a seat at the Family’s table.
All tickets to “Settle In” screenings come with bottomless popcorn, bottomless coffee, and multiple intermissions.
Longer movies are an important part of film history, and are largely underrepresented in theaters due to their bulky runtimes.
“I think there’s something to be said in favor of it, just because there’s kind of the social aspect that keeps us a little more engaged,” said theatergoer Dan Meyer. “At home after two and a half hours, you might start checking your phone or thinking about chores. I like that forced double down. You get to engage with the best.”
Oftentimes, the minute count exceeding 100 would scare away everyday theatergoers. But as it turns out, the opposite is true for an environment like Gene Siskel.
Audiences consistently go in droves to see the curations of colossal runtimes. The theater’s Director of Programming, Rebecca Fons, stated how it’s become an annual event due to its high demand and popularity.
“We started the program in 2023, and our screenings almost all sold out,” Fons said. “The next year was the same, and this year, our first two screenings have also sold out. As long as the audience keeps responding, we’ll keep presenting Settle In.”
Past inclusions for the “Settle In” collection include movies from all around the world. 2024 showcased Wang Bing’s “Dead Souls,” a 507 minute documentary about Chinese labor camp survivors. 2023 highlighted“Sátántangó,” a 450 minute story about a Hungarian village and the effects of communism.
If you’re not up for running the gauntlet just yet, there’s plenty of movies with friendlier runtimes just around the corner.
Screenings of new releases are mixed in with the collections, producing a blend of movies perfect for an afternoon off, seen on the theater’s monthly updated digital calendar.
“If you’re a person who doesn’t want to see [long movies] at home, yeah, go see one,” said theatergoer Marcela Okeke, on her way to see “All We Imagine As Light” (2024). “The way that we watch movies has changed so much. If I’m watching a movie that I’m not going to see in the theater, then I might even watch it in increments, throughout a couple of days.”
Not only are there consistent screenings of international releases, but accessible collections are always just around the corner.
February 7 starts the annual series “Festival of Films from Iran,” including 10 acclaimed classics like Abbos Kaistromi’s “Close Up” and the animated “Persepolis.”
A week later, on February 14, the Siskel will premiere the “Persistence of Memory” catalog, with 10 movies about recollection and unreliable narrators. Catch Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo” or Ingmar Bergman’s “Wild Strawberries” in a packed theater, or take a chance on something unknown.
The recent collection ‘Cinema Unbound’ – which featured the collaborations of directors Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger – used 4K digital restorations fresh off the desks of editor Thelma Schoonmaker and director Martin Scorseese.
A special visit from Schoonmaker before a screening of “The Red Shoes” made it clear that older movies are a necessity for younger audiences.
While every movie in the world is available to watch online, seeing it with a live audience remains the best way to find a new favorite movie. Take a chance, see something new to you.

New film commission board calls for corporate collaboration

The Namibia Film Commission (NFC) has appointed a new board, which says it will explore new ways to strengthen the infrastructure of the local film industry.

The board, with film-maker and producer Esther Beukes as its chairperson, was appointed by minister of information and communication technology Emma Theofelus as of 1 December 2024.

“I am both honoured and fully aware of the responsibility that comes with this appointment. As a board, we have been entrusted with the task of supporting the NFC in becoming an autonomous body – a significant step for the industry and one that requires careful stewardship,” Beukes says.

The newly appointed NFC board includes Beukes, vice chairperson Reagan Malumo and commissioners Ronald James, Iyaloo Hamunyela and Ilalion Muha.

The board members hail from various industries, including film, tourism and media, with aptitude in international collaboration, innovative storytelling, policy development, strategic planning, media development and communications.

“The newly appointed NFC board represents a promising and diverse cohort, each bringing a wealth of experience and unique expertise to advance Namibia’s film industry,” says Beukes.

“While we will work to advance and complete key initiatives set in motion by our predecessors, we must also explore new ways to strengthen the infrastructure of our film sector,” she says.

“Achieving this will require collaboration and support from all industry stakeholders. If we succeed, we will not only fulfil this mandate but also contribute to a more resilient and self-sustaining film industry for the future.”

Beukes outlines the NFC’s key roles as industry advancement through film funding and skills development, the promotion of local film, marketing Namibia as a prime film destination on the global stage, as well as building relationships with international film entities to foster collaboration.

This year, the NFC will support the production of one feature-length film, five short films and one documentary.

Film-makers are encouraged to visit www.nfc.na or follow the NFC on social media for information on the commission’s initiatives and activities.

Reflecting on 2024, Beukes counts a number of notable achievements, including the NFC’s work on Kino Namibia, which trained 49 film-makers in basic film production in the Otjozondjupa region, culminating in the production of four short films currently available on YouTube.

Five new NFC web series, as well as Film Week’s 25 film screenings, its developmental talks and master class sessions were additional highlights.

The NFC also supported the premieres of NFC-funded films ‘Walvis Tale’ and ‘Last Summer’, as well as independent productions ‘Petrina’, ‘LIFE’, ‘Uno & Hatago’, ‘Ompata’ and ‘Skeleton Coast’.

“One of the biggest challenges our industry faces is distribution, which is why the Namflix initiative by One Africa stands out to me. More accessible platforms like this not only give film-makers greater visibility, but also allow us to collect valuable data on local audience trends,” Beukes says.

“This could make it easier for corporate Namibia to recognise the potential of our industry and collaborate meaningfully with local film-makers.”

Beukes additionally underscores that film industry growth is not only a cultural achievement but a significant economic opportunity.

“Film has the potential to create employment, showcase Namibian talent on a global stage and contribute to sectors such as tourism, advertising and technology.

“A collaborative approach can help build a more sustainable industry,” she says.

“By working together, we can create a thriving film sector that benefits both the creative economy and the broader Namibian business landscape.”

Didi Launches Overseas Aggregated Travel Services, International Business Profitable

On January 19th, Didi Global Inc. launched version 7.0 on the Apple App Store. The update log shows that overseas travel services have been opened in some cities in eight countries including Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia.

It is understood that Didi is advancing two new initiatives: first is to launch overseas aggregated travel services on the domestic app so users can use Didi to hail local ride-hailing services such as Grab and Kakao T in countries like South Korea and Japan; second is to deepen its presence in the Latin American market by expanding instant delivery services and providing delivery services for local e-commerce businesses in the future.

Currently, Didi International also provides ride-hailing services for overseas markets such as Egypt, Australia, New Zealand, Japan,Mexico Argentina, and Chile.

Didi’s international business covers three major areas: ride-hailing, food delivery, and finance. The overseas ride-hailing business has achieved profitability, with a daily average order volume of nearly ten million orders. The food delivery business holds a market share of over 50% in Mexico City, while the financial services division issues loans worth hundreds of millions of dollars annually, ranking among the top tier in consumer finance in Latin America.

According to Didi’s third-quarter 2024 financial report data, Didi International completes an average of 10.16 million orders per day, with about 95% coming from the overseas ride-hailing business – roughly one-third of China’s transportation sector – and the rest from food delivery and financial services.

In the Latin American market, Brazil and Mexico are populous countries where Didi expanded early on. In Brazil, operations are conducted under the acquired brand name “99 Taxis,” while in Mexico it is operated by DiDi Global. In both Brazil and Mexico’s ride-hailing markets with daily volumes reaching millions of orders each day, motorcycle deliveries rank at the forefront.

Japan, Australia, and New Zealand are new markets that are gradually being developed. Although the volume is not high yet, there is stable profit.

The difference between the overseas online ride-hailing market and the domestic one lies in the fact that both involve individual drivers. The Didi platform only serves as a connection between drivers and passengers, without needing to establish a large network of driver management like in the domestic market.

In terms of operational management mode, drivers adopt a bidding rather than dispatching model. This allows drivers to choose orders based on personal preferences and adjust prices flexibly during peak traffic periods. Both drivers and passengers are allowed to negotiate prices independently.
