Kamala Harris‘ return to her home in Los Angeles after being booted from the White House was not a particularly friendly one.
The former vice president headed back to California Tuesday to thank Los Angeles firefighters for their efforts during the recent wildfires and for a homecoming after spending the past four years in Washington.
However, her neighbors in the infamous, wealthy enclave of Brentwood – once home to OJ Simpson – were not particularly thrilled to have her home.
‘I’m embarrassed that she lives here, and I’m embarrassed that she represented the United States,’ Lewis, a real estate investor who lives near Harris, said Tuesday.
With rumors Harris may run for governor in 2026, he expressed frustration with the Democrats already in power.
‘Karen Bass, Gavin Newsom, they’ve destroyed my state. Kamala Harris will do exactly the same. I’d rather she find another state to destroy,’ he said.
Another was furious at how the vice president – alongside husband Doug Emhoff – made things difficult for those trying to get in and out of the area.
‘I don’t care that she’s back, except that they block off the road whenever she comes to town,’ another resident said.
Harris maintains a Secret Service protection for the next six months and four black SUVs were guarding her home on Tuesday.
She returned to California on a jet flown to Los Angeles International Airport by an all-female crew.
Harris – who promised Friday that she will not ‘go quietly into the night’ – and Emhoff then served firefighters meals at a World Central Kitchen stop in Altadena, where much of the damage has been done.
‘We wanted to come out … and just let people know that we see them and that they are cared for,’ she said, according to the New York Post.
Morlene Keller, an interior designer and neighbor of Harris, was much more pleased to see her but had hoped she wouldn’t for political reasons.
‘I wish she were back in Washington, but I’m happy to have her back,’ she said.
Peggy Garrity, a retired lawyer, shared those sentiments, while admitting that Brentwood is a very mixed neighborhood of liberals and conservatives.
‘It’s tragic that she’s not in the White House, but it’s a delight to have her as a neighbor,’ Garrity said.
She added that, regardless of politics: ‘Mostly, people find it annoying when they block off Sunset Boulevard.’
‘She’s a good neighbor, but maybe she should just go back to the private life,’ another anonymous resident said.
In recent days, Harris has reportedly complained to close allies that she’s disappointed that Biden has claimed in interviews that he could have won the 2024 election if he hadn’t dropped out of the race.
Harris is said to have expressed a ‘deep sadness’ over her loss and those close to her believe Biden’s dubious contention that he would have won shows the ‘one-sided loyalty’ of their relationship.
This all paints a very gloomy picture of the outgoing VP, but she has seemingly been followed by a dark cloud for her entire political career.
As far back as the 2010s, when Harris served as California’s Attorney General, she was allegedly known for running a ‘toxic’ workplace.
After she was elected in 2017 to represent California in the US Senate, working conditions reportedly did not improve.
Analysis showed her office had the ninth-highest staff turnover rate out of the 114 senators who served between 2017 and 2020.
Others who worked for Harris before she was VP told the Washington Post in December 2021 that she often lodges ‘soul-destroying criticism’ and behaves like a ‘bully.’
According to insiders, Harris is not done with politics and well-connected strategists in DC fully expect her to emerge as a presidential candidate in 2028 or make a bid for governor of California in 2026.
In addition, NBC News reported Monday that Harris may do what many ex-politicos do and publish a book of her time in Washington.
But if Harris does return to the political fray, she may well run into the same roadblock that thwarted her presidential ambitions this time round.
