Fourth Wing fans have rushed to support Rebecca Yarros after she shared an update on book four. It comes as book three, Onyx Storm, finally hits shelves today (January 21).
The hotly-anticipated follow up to Fourth Wing and Iron Flame continues to follow Violet Sorrengail and Xaden Riorson and the other cadets at Basgiath War College.
As fans of the viral fantasy series will know, Fourth Wing was published on April 5, 2023, with Iron Flame following pretty quickly after on October 31, 2023. There was a longer wait between books two and three, with the third instalment going on sale 14 months after Iron Flame.
But readers hoping for a quick follow-up to Onyx Storm may be disappointed, as author Rebecca Yarros confirmed in a recent Instagram comment that she hadn’t started writing it yet.
Rebecca shared a carousel of photos to the social media platform earlier this month along with the caption: “Grateful I was able to start this year in my favorite place with my favorite people, filling the creative well. I even managed to get in some work on this secret project and loved every second if it!
“I can’t wait to hear what you guys think… you know… when we can finally announce stuff. Until then, it’s time to focus.”

In the comments section, one wrote: “I hope you’re working on book 4! We know Book 3 isn’t out but I’m gonna need that one sooner than later PLEASE.”
“Nope!” Rebecca replied, adding: “I’ll write a contemporary first (contracts are contracts) and can’t start that until I can open a word doc without having an anxiety attack. Burn out is real and sucks. But I’m getting closer every day!”
Another comment read: “I am not embarrassed for wanting tk if you’re already writing the empyrean 4,” to which Rebecca said: “Haven’t even started it. The pace in which book 3 needed to be completed almost killed me, and I’m not speaking in hyperbole.”

Fans were quick to offer their support in the comments section, with many saddened by the reactions of others demanding the books sooner. One said: “Take your time! We’ll all be here waiting and we have your other books to read in the meantime!”
Another said: “Please take your time. We’re grateful for any book you put out. But most importantly that you’re in a good headspace to do so! Thank you for all you do!!” A third added: “Wow. I imagine that’s really tough. To write for yourself and your dreams is one thing. I imagine the pressure of writing for the world is another. Rest well.”
