Rebecca Yarros fans have been celebrating the hotly-anticipated release of Onyx Storm. The third book in the The Empyrean series is finally gracing bookshelves today, January 21, much to the delight of eager readers.
The fantasy saga, which began with Fourth Wing’s release on April 5, 2023, and quickly followed by Iron Flame on October 31, 2023, follows the adventures of Violet Sorrengail, Xaden Riorson, and their fellow cadets at Basgiath War College. While the wait for Onyx Storm was a lengthy 14 months after its predecessor, those clamoring for the next chapter may need to be even more patient, reports the Mirror.
Author Rebecca Yarros revealed in a recent Instagram comment that she hasn’t yet begun writing the fourth book. Earlier this month, Rebecca posted a series of photos on Instagram, along with the caption: “Grateful I was able to start this year in my favorite place with my favorite people, filling the creative well.
“I even managed to get in some work on this secret project and loved every second of it! I can’t wait to hear what you guys think… you know… when we can finally announce stuff. Until then, it’s time to focus.”

One fan hoping for progress on the next book commented: “I hope you’re working on book 4! We know Book 3 isn’t out but I’m gonna need that one sooner than later PLEASE.”
Rebecca replied: “Nope! I’ll write a contemporary first (contracts are contracts) and can’t start that until I can open a word doc without having an anxiety attack. Burn out is real and sucks. But I’m getting closer every day!”
And another of Rebecca’s replies in the comments section read: “Haven’t even started it. The pace in which book 3 needed to be completed almost killed me, and I’m not speaking in hyperbole.”

Supportive fans rallied around her in the comments section, urging her to prioritize her well-being over meeting demands for new books. One wrote: “Take your time! We’ll all be here waiting and we have your other books to read in the meantime!” while another said: “Please take your time. We’re grateful for any book you put out. But most importantly that you’re in a good headspace to do so! Thank you for all you do!!”
A third fan empathized with Rebecca’s situation: “Wow. I imagine that’s really tough. To write for yourself and your dreams is one thing. I imagine the pressure of writing for the world is another. Rest well.”
