One under-the-radar stopover destination could cut your travel expenses on long-haul flights to popular spots like Dubai, all while offering plenty to explore in its own right.
TikTok travel creator ‘nicoletravelandlife’ recently shared a smart tip on the app, pointing out that Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, is an ideal layover spot for budget-conscious travellers heading to Asia, the Middle East, and even parts of Africa.
Mario Van Poppel, the founder of the currency exchange platform Manor FX, echoed the advice, highlighting Sofia as a valuable stopover that can save travellers hundreds of pounds on long-haul flights.
He explained: “By routing through Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia, travellers can secure cheaper long-haul flights to destinations like Asia, the Middle East and even parts of Africa.
“It’s a true hidden gem when it comes to travel savings as its Southeast Europe location is closer to other continents. And it’s a more affordable layover than other European hubs.”
Mario also pointed out the added benefit of Bulgaria being an affordable destination in its own right: “Not only are flights cheaper, but Bulgaria itself is a budget-friendly location, making it well worth a trip.”
Many budget airlines operate out of Sofia, offering cost-effective connections to major destinations, while long-haul carriers like Emirates and Qatar also run competitive flights from the city.
Sofia offers more than just budget-friendly flights; it’s a city worth exploring, with Mario pointing out: “From Alexander Nevsky’s Cathedral, one of the largest Eastern Orthodox cathedrals in the world, to Vitosha Mountain, a short drive out of the city, there’s lots to see and do in Sofia.
“Visitors will also be treated to hearty local cuisine, such as the cheese-filled pastry called banitsa and kavarma, a slow-cooked meat stew, at a fraction of the cost to other cities in Western Europe.”
When it comes to accommodation, Bulgaria remains affordable, with mid-range hotels averaging £40-£60 per night. And if you enjoy a pint, expect beer to cost around £1.70-£2.20.
The Bulgarian Lev (BGN), which is tied to the Euro at a fixed rate, offers stable and predictable exchange rates, making it easy for travellers to manage their expenses.
“While it is planning to adopt the Euro, for now, Bulgaria remains one of the last countries in Europe to still have its own currency,” Mario said.
“Another reason to visit now, being independent of the Eurozone means the cost of living is cheaper and it is one of only six EU countries to have its own currency, a bucket list location to tick off.”
For those eager to explore, Bulgaria’s banknotes, which feature notable historical figures like Ivan Milandinov and Ivan Vazov, also offer a mini history lesson with every transaction.
Mario recommended making even more savings by exchanging currency ahead of time to avoid fluctuating exchange rates in tourist-heavy areas.
