We get it — authors pour their hearts into crafting a book, only for us to binge it in 24 hours and immediately demand the sequel. And yeah, we’re already counting down the days for book 4 of Rebecca Yarros’ Empyrean series. Who can blame us after *that* ending?

When Will Book 4 Drop?
ICYMI, Onyx Storm just launched on January 21, 2025, following the whirlwind releases of Fourth Wing and Iron Flame in 2023. Back in March 2024, Yarros spilled the tea on Good Morning America: “I can’t tell you much yet, but I can tell you the title: Onyx Storm.” She also promised fans “politics, new adventures, old enemies, and of course, dragons.”
But if you’re hoping book 4 will arrive quickly, think again. In November 2023, Rebecca told Entertainment Weekly that she’s pacing herself this time around. “I will tell you that the speed at which I wrote Fourth Wing, in between I wrote In the Likely Event, and then I wrote Iron Flame happened so quickly in the middle of touring, in the middle of everything, that it was really hard on my body.”
“I’m respecting my limitations and taking [things] a bit slower so that I can be healthy through all of it,” she revealed. Translation? Book 4 might also take a while. Considering it took about two years to get from Iron Flame to Onyx Storm, we’re thinking late 2026 or maybe even 2027. Stock up on patience.
How Many Books Are Coming in the Empyrean Series?
Plot twist: what started as a trilogy quickly grew. Rebecca told Variety, “Probably about 30,000 words in, I called my editor and said, ‘I think this is a five-book series.’” And with all the new characters and lore that unfolded by the end of *Iron Flame*, it became clear that splitting the story into five books was the only way to do it justice.
So while we’re busy clutching our copies of Onyx Storm, just know the endgame is still a few books away. Will Violet and Xaden finally get a breather? Will we survive the cliffhangers? Only time will tell.
