Gozo Book Club is a free, monthly discussion group that was set up on the island seven years ago. Readers meet from 10.30am – 11.30am on the last Wednesday of each month.
All the book titles for the forthcoming year and the monthly meeting dates are shared on the group’s Facebook page, where those interested can also join in the discussion, and find lots of book-related information and further reading ideas.
The group said that it has proved a real success story with readers, who informally meet over a coffee to discuss the book of the month and share their opinions and thoughts.
It said that the two aims of the group are to firstly create a space where reading, often a solitary act, is transformed into a communal experience; and secondly, to read “beyond the bestsellers,” enabling members of the group to discover books across different genres, eras and themes that they perhaps wouldn’t have picked up otherwise.
Book Club Gozo readers will meet next on Wednesday, the 29th of January, to discuss ‘Death in Valletta’ by Lynne Marie Taylor, the author’s debut historical crime fiction novel, set in Victorian-era Malta.
The Group said that Malta Libraries staff based at Gozo’s Central Public Library, in Victoria have been very supportive in helping to publicise the club at the library. Copies of all the 2025 book club choices have been added to library stock and can be borrowed free of charge. Some of titles can also be downloaded using the free online e-Books service offered through Malta Libraries.
Details of the meeting venue and dates are given on the group’s Facebook page, and also at the library
Karen, a regular member of the book club said, “Gozo is a surprising place to begin with, and the book club is no exception. The books chosen are from every genre and the members have lived in all four corners of the world, which makes for lively discussion – first, you’ll learn something from the book, then you’ll learn something more from the talk. Above all, this little group, which meets at a café over coffee and cake provides an excellent way to spend a few hours on the last Wednesday morning of every month.”
Jill, another member of Book Club Gozo commented that, “the book club provides opportunities to meet with other readers who love books, and to share our reactions to the books we read. Our enjoyable discussions of books often expand to include films, theatre, and other cultural events in Gozo.”
