UK holidaymakers eyeing up a Spanish getaway this year need to be clued up on the latest entry requirements, as a key change will is expected to impact 2025 holidays. The roll-out of the EU’s new Entry/Exit System (EES) was delayed once again in November and is now expected to begin this year.
The new automated entry system will require British travellers to scan their passports at an automated self-service kiosk instead of getting it manually stamped at the border. The system will register the person’s name, type of travel document, the date and place of entry and exit, as well as biometric data like fingerprints and a facial image
While a revised launch date is yet to be confirmed, it’s anticipated to be in 2025. Until then, UK travellers will still need to have their passports stamped upon arrival and departure.
The Spanish government has certain conditions of entry for travellers from outside of the EU, including the UK. This includes being able to provide ‘evidence’ of meeting entry requirements when asked to do so by border control officials.
Alongside a valid passport, the Foreign Office advises that visitors may be asked to present a return or onward ticket, proof of travel insurance, confirmation of hotel booking or an invitation if staying with friends or family, and proof of sufficient funds for the duration of their stay.
According to the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs website, travellers are required to have a minimum of €114 per person per day, which is approximately £95. If the stay extends to nine days or more, they must possess at least €1,021 (around £859), reports Birmingham Live.
These figures are yet to be updated for 2025 and may change. Visitors can demonstrate their financial means by presenting cash, a traveller’s cheque, or a credit card along with a bank statement.
Many tourists will not be asked to provide this evidence, but it’s worth having the documents on hand when you arrive, as being unable to present them when asked can result in a refusal of entry.
