You might want to rethink your travel plans to this South American nation this winter.
The U.S. State Department issued a “Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution” travel advisory for U.S. travelers heading to Chile.
The advisory warns travelers heading to certain areas of Chile to be aware of their surroundings due to crime and civil unrest.
“Street crime” is common and “violent crime” is increasing in the country, according to the State Department.
There are also large-scale protests that take place in the capital city of Santiago and other cities with little-to-no notice, and can sometimes cause disruption to public transportation services.
The State Department advises those who are traveling to Chile to keep in mind the following precautions:
- Do not leave luggage or valuables out of your sight, even in locked vehicles.
- Always carry a copy of your U.S. passport and if you need it, your visa. Keep original documents in a safe location.
- Avoid demonstrations.
- Obey local authorities’ instructions, including restrictions on movement and curfews.
- During protests, head to “a safe location and shelter in place.”
