“He’s back!!,” to paraphrase the young girl warning her family of the return of evil to their house in the 1982 horror fantasy film “Poltergeist.”
Donald Trump’s return to the White House is surely more terrifying to millions of Americans than any of the scary scenes from the movie. Amazingly, the man has shown once again that honesty, integrity, character and decency are not necessary to reach our nation’s highest office.
Off to a great start, Trump and his minions attacked an Episcopal bishop who — during a sermon at a service the president attended — merely encouraged him to be merciful and compassionate.
After taking office, he quickly pulled the United States out of both the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement. He has grandchildren, but apparently is not too concerned about their futures.
Trump quickly pardoned over 1,500 rioters, many of them violent, who desecrated our Capitol in that inglorious event Jan. 6, 2021. Many in law enforcement still support him, even after his Make America Great Again maniacs assaulted 140 police officers while he happily watched on TV. How do they feel now that those who defended our democracy that day have been so disrespected?
It seems now that Trump, as he claimed during his 2016 campaign, actually “could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody,” and not lose any supporters. After the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2024 ruling broadening presidential immunity, maybe he should give the public a heads-up whenever he’ll be in New York.
Lowering expectations, Trump’s second term will be considered a success by millions if he can just get by without accidentally hitting the nuclear button while reaching for another Big Mac.
At least we now know that all those post-election drone sightings were really just the Martians checking to see if there was still any intelligent life left in the United States.
Maybe not.
