The Catholic Weekly readers have helped to raise funds for a rural preschool nursery and primary school in Uganda, through sales of books by Sydney priest Fr Martin Maunsell.
The paper reported in January 2024 that Fr Maunsell had published his third Cuppa Time Reflections book with all proceeds from sales going to renovations of Pere Achte Catholic Primary School in a mountainous region called Rwenzori in southwestern Uganda.
More than $5000 was raised from the sales of the first two books and funded classroom renovations, a toilet block, computers and food aid.
Eastwood parishioner Marisa Pongan said subsequent donations resulted in completed renovations for two classrooms for more than 60 pre-school children, furniture, books and stationery, a toy library and television.
“The response was outstanding,” she said.
“With a safe, stimulating preschool environment available, the parents’ work production in the fields has increased.
“These renovations have also provided much-needed employment to tradesmen who worked on the site.
“All this would not be possible without the collegiality, accountability, and dedication of the Ugandan team, parish priest Fr Fabius Bainakanaama and school headmaster Muhenda Amooti.”
In an email to Pongan seen by The Catholic Weekly Amooti expressed his “innermost gratitude for all the support you have rendered so far and the support we continue to have.”
