The Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that they have charged Akeel Abdul Jamiel, an Iraqi who is not a U.S. citizen, with illegally voting in the November 2020 election.

Abdul Jamiel, from South Glens Falls, New York, was formally charged on Friday with “illegal voting by an alien.”
According to the DOJ, the man is accused of registering and casting a ballot in the 2020 election, an act prohibited under federal law for foreign nationals.
United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III announced the charge, suggesting that investigations into illegal voting will continue.
“As alleged, Jamiel’s voting in the 2020 election was a callous and illegal act,” Sarcone said. “We will continue to investigate and prosecute illegal schemes aimed at corrupting the election process.”
The DOJ credited Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) for assisting with the investigation.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Craig L. Tremaroli also participated in the investigation.
“Election security is and will continue to be one of the FBI’s highest national security priorities,” Tremaroli stated. “Americans have a right to expect free and fair elections and the FBI is committed to working with our partners to seek justice for anyone trying to interfere with the democratic process.”
In a rather noteworthy twist, Abdul Jamiel, according to the Times Union, was registered with the Conservative Party. This makes it clear that the Justice Department is not concerned with party affiliation but rather with addressing election integrity across the board.
Democratic Board of Elections Commissioner Cassandra Bagramian’s explanation of how he could have registered without much of an issue is mind-boggling.
“It’s an ‘honor system,’” she told the newspaper. “The voter signs an oath, so if it’s properly completed, it’s processed.”

A Chinese national, who was in the United States as a University of Michigan student, was slapped with criminal charges this past October for trying to vote in the 2024 presidential election in Michigan illegally.
At the time, a press release issued by Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D) explained that he had been charged with a felony count of making an unauthorized attempt to vote and another count of perjury.
The Michigan Department of State followed up in early April and found 15 credible cases in which non-citizens cast ballots in the 2024 general election.
The charge against Abdul Jamiel is a misdemeanor and could result in up to one year in prison and a $100,000 fine if convicted.
