Will Smith’s ‘Agent J’ Is Back? ‘Men In Black’ Movie Reboot Reportedly In Works

If you are a Will Smith fan, chances are you have already watched the Men in Black movies. The first movie in the highly successful franchise, Men in Black, was released almost two decades ago, in 1997. Since then, there have been three sequels over the years: Men in Black II (2002), Men in Black III (2012), and Men in Black: International (2019). The first three films in the franchise, alongside Will Smith, star actor, Tommy Lee Jones, while the last feature Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. Now, on the off chance that you are a die-hard fan of this sci-fi action comedy film series and can’t get enough of it, we are here to bring good news. Recent reports suggest that there is going to be a new movie addition to the Men in Black universe. Here’s everything we know.  

Will we see Will Smith returning in the new Men in Black reboot? 

Sony Pictures has set its eyes on the black suits and shades once again. If you haven’t already guessed from this, we are talking about none other than one of its biggest sci-fi hits, the Men in Black universe. According to Deadline, a new addition will soon be made to the highly successful franchise. For those who don’t know, the news of this reboot followed Sony Pictures’ successful reboot of its Bad Boys franchise.  

If the Deadline report is to be believed, Chris Bremner, popularly known for his works as a writer for Bad Boys for Life and Bad Boys: Ride or Die, is set to draft a script for the fifth instalment in the Men in Black universe. Now, it is essential to note that the studio itself has not yet issued an official statement regarding this matter; however, many industry insiders suggest that this upcoming film is Sony’s next big nostalgia-driven project. Additionally, as per reports, no cast or director has been confirmed for the film yet. Plot details for the film also remain unknown. Still, according to Deadline sources, Will Smith, the original actor in the sci-fi comedy series, will be the first to receive the finished script from Chris, in hopes that he will reprise his role as the widely popular ‘Agent J’.  

Furthermore, specifics regarding the character, like whether it will be a starring role or more of a supporting role, are also undetermined at the moment. There is also a possibility that we will see Will Smith in a passing-of-the-torch type role, something we have previously seen in movies like Creed — but the initial plan is to have Will’s character back in the first draft itself. Although fair warning, fans should be prepared for a bit of disappointment, as sources insist that Will is not super attached to the franchise and will only commit to the film if he thinks it’s worth his time after he reads the script.  

Return of the billion-dollar franchise  

As one might guess, due to the immense popularity of the Men in Black series, it remains one of Sony’s most successful and lucrative franchises to date. Combining the trinity of comedy, action, and aliens, the original 1997 film, starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, was a cultural phenomenon. Since then, the franchise has spawned two sequels and a 2019 reboot starring Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson. As per reports, all four films combined, the franchise has earned nearly 1.9 billion USD at the global box office.
