COLUMBIA, S.C. (WACH) — On Saturday morning, Congressman Jim Clyburn speaking at the University of South Carolina about his newly released book called “The First Eight”.
The book goes into detail about the eight people of color who served in congress from South Carolina before Clyburn. The new release gives an explanation on why it took 95 years between the eighth and ninth congressman, who is Clyburn, to be elected.
Clyburn says the inspiration for this book came from the mistaken belief people had that he was the first person of color to serve in Congress from South Carolina. The Congressman spoke to dozens at the University of South Carolina this morning about the background of this book and gave his perspective. He also held a book signing following the lecture for those in attendance.
“It gets into the life of these eight people. How they came into these issues, and how these issues affected what they were doing in the Congress,” Clyburn said. “I discuss each one of them, and they contributed and the differences.”
You can find the book in local book stores and on platforms like Google Books and Amazon.
