Avengers movies have always been the big centerpieces of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They’ve been designed to end Phases or Sagas in epic style, with audiences coming to expect to see one every three years at first. That all changed when Avengers: Endgame came out just a year after Avengers: Infinity War.
But now we’ve gone six years without a new Avengers, as Marvel Studios has faced many challenges on its path to make good on the promised path to Avengers: Secret Wars to conclude Phase 6 and the Multiverse Saga. We’re now set to get Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars one year apart, with them coming out in December 2026 and December 2027, respectively.
There has been speculation about Marvel adding a secret third Avengers movie to Phase 6 by splitting Secret Wars into two parts. Now, Marvel has added another Avengers release to 2026, finding a new way to pay off a plan that was previously abandoned.
Marvel Is Releasing Two Avengers Movies In The Same Year After All
Disney and Marvel Studios recently confirmed plans to re-release Avengers: Endgame in theaters next year. The Phase 3 film will return to theaters on September 25, 2026, just over seven years after it left theaters at the end of its original run.
The timing is purposeful, as the studios want to put the MCU epic directed by the Russo brothers and starring Robert Downey Jr. back in theaters before that trio makes their (hopefully) triumphant return to the cinematic universe with Avengers: Doomsday‘s release three months later.
This does mean that, technically, we’re getting two Avengers movies released in theaters in the same year. What makes that notable is that this was Marvel’s original plan for Phase 6. 2025 was supposed to have two Avengers movies released just six months apart. Now, Marvel Studios will make good on that plan, albeit a year later and with a different Avengers title.
2026’s Two Avengers Movies Aren’t As Exciting As The Original Phase 6 Plan
You see, Marvel Studios initially wanted to release two brand new Avengers movies in theaters the same year. When Phase 6 was unveiled at San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Kevin Feige announced Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars with May 2, 2025, and November 7, 2025, releases, respectively.
This would’ve been an unprecedented event for the MCU, releasing two of its biggest movies ever just six from each other. It always seemed like an overly ambitious plan for Marvel Studios given the size and scale of these complicated productions, and once Phase 6 was delayed entirely, they abandoned it for a still tight one-year gap schedule.
As exciting as it will be to see Endgame in theaters again so close to Doomsday (with some sort of new look at the latter likely going to be attached), the anticipation isn’t close to the original plan. We’ve already seen Endgame, and no amount of fresh footage of Doomsday will make that re-release screening feel as monumental as an entirely new Avengers movie.
But since we’re not getting Doomsday and Secret Wars released in the same year, this two Avengers film release plan with Endgame‘s re-release is arguably the best the MCU could ever do.
