Google’s list of the most searched films of the year gives fans the chance to claim one more accolade before 2025 is over.
Per Google and What’s on Netflix, KPop Demon Hunters has officially been named the most searched for movie of 2025 for users in the United States. KPop Demon Hunters is followed by Sinners and A Minecraft Movie in second and third place on the list, although it surprisingly doesn’t show up on the list of the top 10 most searched films globally.
Netflix’s KPop Demon Hunters Officially Named America’s Most-Searched Movie of 2025
Directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans from a screenplay co-written along with Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, KPop Demon Hunters premiered on Netflix on June 20 and immediately cemented its place as the latest pop culture sensation. The film follows Rumi, Mira and Zoey, better known as the members of K-pop girl group Huntrix, who fight back against the forces of evil while also keeping up appearances for their adoring fans.
When a new group, the Saja Boys, come out of nowhere and start amassing a staggering fan base of their own, they threaten not just Huntrix’s popularity but also the mystical barrier known as the Honmoon that they have been tasked with protecting. Soon enough, deeply held secrets and interpersonal drama push Huntrix to their breaking point, all before an epic confrontation with the demonic Gwi-Ma for the fate of the entire world.
Upon its release, KPop Demon Hunters was lauded by critics and audiences alike. As of the time of writing, the film holds a 96% “Certified Fresh” rating via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, as averaged across 92 verified critical reviews. KPop Demon Hunters also holds a near-perfect 99% “Popcornmeter” score, as averaged across more than 500 verified user-submitted reviews.
While the movie has absolutely dominated the Netflix charts since its premiere on the platform, it hasn’t always fared as well across its various theatrical releases. During its second theatrical run, which placed KPop Demon Hunters in 2,890 theaters, the film only managed to bring in a fraction of its expected box office return, with one distribution source going so far as to stat that “there’s no more juice left in that squeeze.”
Following the overwhelming success of KPop Demon Hunters as a whole, talks of a sequel or follow-up feature cropped up in short order. According to directors Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, however, fans have no reason to look forward to any sort of live-action adaptation of the film. “I think it will be so much more challenging to make [KPop Demon Hunters] live-action,” Kang said of the idea. “I think it would be hard.”
“You said it well in terms of animation and what’s hard about it, which is [that] it’s not just about recreating real life, it’s about a kind of distillation of it,” Appelhans added. “You’re trying to push everything — if it’s a shape, you push the shape, if it’s an idea, you push the idea, if it’s a joke…that does create a certain framework that works really well with this tone. So yeah, I don’t know. It would be hard.”
KPop Demon Hunters is currently available for streaming on Netflix.
