“Higher Education,” starring Elizabeth LiMei and Orion Smith (“The Conjuring: Last Rites), is a new coming-of-age dramatic short film.
Elizabeth LiMei served as writer and executive producer on this project.
It follows idealistic Sociology major Mia Shen (Elizabeth LiMei) and her best friend Ryan Connors (Orion Smith) over the course of four undergraduate years as they navigate the trials and tribulations of college life.
Amid systemic failures and personal struggles, their dreams are tested forcing them to confront who they are, and who they want to be.
Orion Smith commands each scene he is in as Ryan… his performance is subtle, charming and natural, but there’s an emotional moment that he truly knocks out the ballpark. Their moving rapport allows for more resonance.
This role and character showcase a different side to his artistry (it is much different than “The Conjuring: Last Rites”).
Mason Heller did a solid job with its direction, who is able to balance the levity with the heavier moments; moreover, the screenplay by LiMei is deep and rich in character development.
The Verdict
Overall, “Higher Education” is a compelling short movie, starring Elizabeth LiMei and Orion Smith, that will drench viewers in a wide spectrum of raw emotions.
Its subject matter is relatable, especially for anybody navigating their collegiate years and the complex realities and curveballs of life.
Despite only being half hour in duration, the audience will get a lot from it, and it will spark conversations among viewers. It is certainly food for thought.
Viewers can easily see themselves as Mia and Ryan. This short deserves to be made into a full-length feature film someday (since fans will want to see more). “Higher Education” garners 4.5 out of 5 stars.
