In case you needed a reminder, Valentine’s Day is Saturday. While it’s likely too late to book a reservation at a fancy restaurant, there’s nothing stopping you from buying some flowers, making a nice dinner, and staying in for a lovely movie night with your significant other. From an Oscar-nominated biopic to a coming-of-age cult classic, here’s what to stream this weekend.
New movies now available to stream
‘Blue Moon’
Directed by Richard Linklater, the Oscar-nominated biopic about Broadway lyricist Lorenz Hart arrives on Netflix Saturday. Ethan Hawke is up for best actor at this year’s Oscars for his take on Hart, with “Blue Moon” also nominated for best original screenplay. Also starring Margaret Qualley and Bobby Cannavale, “Blue Moon” earned 3½ stars from Globe film critic Odie Henderson, who praised Linklater for getting “great work from his ensemble cast,” with particular kudos for Hawke, whose performance he called “spectacular.” Available to stream beginning Saturday on Netflix
‘Eternity’
Marvel movie veterans Miles Teller and Elizabeth Olsen team up for the new rom-com “Eternity,” streaming on Apple TV beginning Friday. The film centers around an afterlife love triangle, where Olsen’s Joan must choose between spending eternity with Larry (Teller), the man she built her life on Earth with, or Luke (Callum Turner), her first husband who died years earlier in the Korean War. While Henderson only awarded the film two stars, he noted in his review that the flick’s plot does bear “some resemblance” to the “far superior” afterlife comedy “Defending Your Life.” Available on Apple TV

‘Cross’
D.C. detective Alex Cross was previously played on the big screen by Morgan Freeman and Tyler Perry, but in more recent days, Aldis Hodge (“City on a Hill,” “Leverage”) has starred in Prime Video’s take on James Patterson’s famous character. “Cross” returned for season 2 earlier this week, with the latest installment centering around the hero going after a vigilante who’s hunting billionaires. Available on Prime Video
Binge-worthy weekend TV pick

‘Schitt’s Creek’
Film and television star Catherine O’Hara died last month, leaving an immense hole in the hearts of family, friends, and fans of the actress. In recent years, O’Hara earned acclaim and affection from viewers for her unforgettable role as matriarch Moira Rose on “Schitt’s Creek,” which recently started streaming on HBO Max (it’s also streaming on Disney+, Hulu, and Prime Video). O’Hara was nominated twice at the Emmys for the part, winning in 2020 for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series. Available on Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, and Prime Video
Movie night pick

‘Sing Street’
The ’80s-set, Irish coming-of-age tale “Sing Street” celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and it’s a perfect fit for a Valentine’s movie night. Directed and written by John Carney (“Once”), the film stars Ferdia Walsh-Peelo as Conor, a young teen who starts a band with his friends and tries to win the affection of the hip girl in town (Lucy Boynton). In addition to the cute romance at the film’s heart, “Sing Street” has a great soundtrack, too, including original music that is a love letter to ’80s bops. Available on Netflix
