‘Pennum Porattum’, the directorial debut of Rajesh Madhavan, opened at the box office with a modest Rs 12 lakhs worldwide. As reported by the Sacnilk website, the India net earnings stood at Rs 11 lakhs with India gross matching at Rs 12 lakhs. Though the film’s start is low the opening is seen as decent for an experimental and character-driven Malayalam drama featuring newcomers.
Rajesh Madhavan draws inspiration from realist cinema
Ahead of release, Rajesh Madhavan shared how the acclaimed 2017 film ‘Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum’ shaped his approach to casting. Directed by Dileesh Pothan and starring Fahadh Faasil, the film famously featured real police officers.Speaking to The Cue Studio, Rajesh said, “I believe that to narrate the story in my style, new people were required. I started working with Pothan, and that is where I learned it. During ‘Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum’, he came up one day and said that we would cast real cops. Today, it is not a big deal, but that was not the case back then. How would you cast real cops? But that was made possible. It is one of the biggest wonders I have seen—for real—from the casting to the execution of Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum. If that were possible, this could be easily done.”
A stark village setting anchors the narrative
‘Pennum Porattum’ is set in Pattada, a village known for its deep association with death. The story revolves around Gopalan Master, Charulatha, and Suttu—three individuals shaped and scarred by the village’s unforgiving environment. If ‘Pennum Porattum’ garners sustained support, Rajesh Madhavan’s directorial debut may see a gradual climb during the weekend as there are no big competition.DISCLAIMER: The box office numbers and data in this article are compiled from diverse public and industry sources.
