The Mandalorian and Grogu‘s cast has sneakily added an Oscar winner.
The upcoming film serves as Star Wars‘ return to the big screen after nearly a decade, as well as a continuation of the hit Disney+ series. Helmed by Jon Favreau and co-written by him and Lucasfilm’s new President Dave Filoni, the film will see the titular duo enlisted by the still-forming New Republic in the hopes of taking out a variety of Imperial warlords spread across the galaxy, all while the Yoda-adjacent infant continues honing his Force powers.
With three months left until its theatrical debut on May 22, Disney unveiled a new Mandalorian and Grogu trailer, in which it appeared that Martin Scorsese voiced an alien cook of a food stand who Pedro Pascal’s titular gunslinger approaches for information. Now, ScreenRant can officially confirm that Scorsese voices the character, with a representative from Disney confirming that the Oscar-winning filmmaker is in the Star Wars movie’s cast.
Scorsese’s role appears around the 20-second mark of the new Mandalorian and Grogu trailer, with Din Djarin and Grogu approaching his character and offering him a New Republic coin in exchange for information, though swiftly turns Pascal’s character away when learning he’s looking for a member of the Hutt family. Speculation was immediately fueled about the Oscar-winning director playing the character due to the combination of his recognizable, fast-talking, New York-accented voice, as well as the facial design of the character being reminiscent of him.
Even before Scorsese’s sneaky role in the new film, the world of The Mandalorian has featured a wide range of high-caliber talent making cameos in the Disney+ series, including various filmmakers. Beginning with Oscar nominee Werner Herzog portraying the mysterious Client in season 1, the Star Wars show has since featured everyone from acclaimed comedian Bill Burr to John Leguizamo, Jack Black and Lizzo, among many others.
Beyond it being his quiet introduction to the franchise, Scorsese’s role in The Mandalorian and Grogu also comes at a unique time for the director. For starters, the Star Wars film sees him playing his first animated character in over 20 years, having previously portrayed the pufferfish boss to Will Smith’s Oscar in Shark Tale. Additionally, it marks one of three proper acting roles Scorsese has had in the past few years, appearing as a fictionalized version of himself in Seth Rogen’s The Studio, while also co-starring in the time-bending drama In the Hand of Dante and Jonah Hill’s next directorial effort Outcome, which also releases in 2026.
Every Martin Scorsese Role Outside His Own Movies
Martin Scorsese has not only had cameo or minor roles in his own movies but also in projects outside his own works – and here they are.
Ultimately, one of the sweeter stories behind Scorsese’s surprise The Mandalorian and Grogu role is that it serves as a reunion for him and Favreau over a decade after his role in The Wolf of Wall Street. Favreau has described Scorsese in the past as being a hero of his, and thus getting the opportunity to switch roles and direct the Oscar winner is sure to have led to unique experience for both parties.
