Video: Why Superman is rooted in Ohio (in more ways than one)
“Superman” drops in theaters July 11. Here’s a look at the superhero’s connections to Ohio, from the Hall of Justice (in Cincinnati) to his creators being from Cleveland.
It’s a bird. It’s a plane. It’s a new “Superman” movie filming in Cincinnati.
A film called “Exodus,” believed to be the sequel to the 2025 superhero movie, was awarded nearly $2 million in motion picture tax credits from Ohio to film in Cincinnati, according to a press release.
DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn revealed in September 2025 that the follow-up to his blockbuster hit “Superman” will be titled “Man of Tomorrow.”
While there’s no official confirmation that “Exodus” is the same film, the tax credit application contains the same contact information, director and producer as “Superman.” S&K Pictures, Inc., which shares an address with Warner Bros., and Lex Pascual, vice president of production incentives at Warner Bros. Discovery, applied for the tax credit in January.
The working title also follows the same naming convention as the first film, which had a working title of “Genesis,” Cleveland.com reports.
Per the application, James Gunn is listed as the director and David Corenswet (Superman) and Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane) are listed as principal casting directors.
According to the application, the first pre-production date is June 15 and filming is supposed wrap up by Aug. 21. Five of those days are expected to be spent shooting the film.
The application does not specify when nor where filming will take place in Cincinnati.
Gunn’s 2025 “Superman,” filmed scenes at the Cincinnati Museum Center’s Union Terminal and the Lytle Tunnel. It grossed over $600 million worldwide at the box office and ranked No. 8 on USA TODAY’s list of the best movies of 2025. It also took the No. 1 spot on IMDb’s most popular movies of 2025 list, making it the most-viewed and most-searched title on the platform.
According to USA TODAY, Gunn previously revealed he was working on a DC movie featuring Superman, though he suggested it would not be a traditional sequel. In a July post on Threads, Gunn said “Superman has a major role” in the movie he was writing, but he said “it’s not ‘Superman 2.'”
“Man of Tomorrow,” is expected to hit theaters on July 9, 2027.
