Prime Video subscribers are revisiting Guy Ritchie’s original Sherlock Holmes movie. The renewed interest in the 2009 mystery crime film comes ahead of the premiere of Young Sherlock, the filmmaker’s radically different take on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic sleuth, on the streaming service.
FlixPatrol is reporting that Sherlock Holmes has returned to Prime Video’s Top 10 Movies chart in the United States. The movie is currently ranked No. 10. It’s not the only Ritchie movie on the chart, as Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, starring frequent collaborator Jason Statham, is in the No. 1 spot.
Released in 2009, Sherlock Holmes stars Robert Downey Jr. as eccentric detective Sherlock Holmes and Jude Law as his companion Dr. John Watson as they attempt to foil a serial killer’s plot to gain control of Britain by seemingly supernatural means.
The ensemble cast was rounded out by Rachel McAdams as Holmes’ former adversary Irene Adler, Mark Strong as the villainous Lord Henry Blackwood, Kelly Reilly as Mary Morstan, and Eddie Marsan as Inspector Lestrade. Sherlock Holmes received mostly positive reviews from critics and was a commercial success, grossing $524 million worldwide.
Guy Ritchie Returns to Sherlock Holmes With New Prime Video Series
Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes kicked off a new wave of adaptations featuring the beloved detective, such as Sherlock on the BBC and Elementary on CBS. Almost 20 years later, the adaptations have not slowed, with Watson currently airing on CBS and Young Sherlock set to premiere on Prime Video on Mar. 4.
Young Sherlock stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin as a teenage version of the title sleuth, who is “disgraced, raw, unfiltered, and unformed, when he finds himself caught up in a murder mystery at Oxford University which threatens his freedom. Diving into his first-ever case with a wild lack of discipline, Sherlock manages to unravel a globe-trotting conspiracy that will change his life forever.”
Ritchie directed the upcoming series, in addition to executive producing. Young Sherlock also stars Zine Tseng, Dónal Finn, Joseph Fiennes, Natascha McElhone, Colin Firth, and Max Irons. Anticipation is high for the series, as it has already broken one major Prime Video record.
With Sherlock Holmes remaining as popular as ever, it’s a bit surprising that Warner Bros. hasn’t moved forward with a sequel to the Downey and Law-led films. Ritchie returned to helm the first sequel, 2011’s Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which was released to similar critical and commercial acclaim.
A third Sherlock Holmes movie has been in development since before A Game of Shadows hit theaters. Unfortunately, the project has fallen into development hell, with no sign as to when it might officially enter production. Trusted scooper Daniel Richtman recently claimed that the sequel was back in active development, although fans should take this rumor with a grain of salt until officially confirmed by a trade or the studio itself.
It’s unclear if Ritchie would return to helm Sherlock Holmes 3. Dexter Fletcher was at one point tapped to replace him in the director’s chair, but that was when the movie was targeting a 2021 release. Ritchie remains one of the busiest filmmakers in Hollywood and is currently filming his sixth movie with Statham.
Sherlock Holmes is available to stream on Prime Video, while Young Sherlock premieres on the service on Mar. 4.
