It’s official: Amy Rose will be played by Kristen Bell in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
This was just confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, revealing Amy’s actor after endless speculation in the Sonic community. It also comes after Amy was teased to have a major role in the next Sonic film, alongside Metal Sonic.
Kristen Bell Is Amy Rose
Bell is, of course, no stranger to voice acting. Famously playing Anna in Frozen, she is certainly a logical choice to play yet another upbeat, positive character, even if this does seem to be quite a different take on Amy than many are used to. That is because Amy’s characterisation has changed quite a lot in recent years, moving away from the Sonic-obsessed comic relief we got in many of the games.
Judging from the teaser at the end of Sonic 3, this take on Amy is going to give her a lot more to do. We see her take on Metal Sonic with her hammer and save Sonic, quite the inversion of how she was introduced in the games with Sonic CD, which had her kidnapped by Metal Sonic. In fact, some think the inversion will be taken even further, and it will be Sonic who’s down bad for Amy.
In terms of the overall narrative, all clues point to Metal Sonic (and presumably Amy) coming from an alternative future in which Eggman is victorious. That could mean we have some Terminator shenanigans going on here, with Metal Sonic sent back in time to take out Sonic, and Amy going back to protect him.
As for Eggman’s involvement, that remains unclear. It seems like Jim Carrey is always threatening to retire from acting, only to return for the next Sonic film. Once again, the writers have given him an out if he doesn’t want to reprise the role, but they’re also ready to write him back in if he does, leaving his fate after the third movie uncertain.
We’re still in for quite the wait to find out what is actually going down here. Sonic 4 is set to hit theatres on March 19, 2027.
