Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist just added the DCEU’s Supergirl to its leading cast. Sasha Calle has officially signed on for a leading role in the upcoming film. Although Calle’s role, like plot details, is being kept tightly under wraps for the time being, fans do know that the film will be set in the same universe as the 1973 original rather than serving as a remake or reboot.
Filming on Flanagan’s addition to The Exorcist franchise is underway in New York City. Along with Calle, The Exorcist cast includes Scarlett Johansson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Laurence Fishburne, Diane Lane, and Jacobi Jupe. The film is both written and directed by Flanagan, who also serves as producer via his Red Room Pictures banner.
Alexandra Magistro is also executive producing for Red Room Pictures, with Ryan Turek and Jason Blum executive producing for Blumhouse-Atomic Monster. David Robinson is executive producing for Morgan Creek Entertainment.
Calle got started on-screen with a role in The Young and the Restless, playing Lola Rosales from 2018 up through 2021. In 2023, Calle had her breakthrough feature film role as Kara Zor-El, better known as Supergirl, in The Flash. Since then, Calle has appeared in a handful of films, ranging from On Swift Horses to the recently released action hit The Rip starring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.
What Can Fans Expect from Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist?
Flanagan’s take on The Exorcist is expected to offer a more grounded, tense experience than many of the franchise’s entries. However, there is little doubt it will continue in the spirit of the 1973 original. After the film was announced in 2024, it was described as a “radical new take” on the classic, with Jason Blum singing particularly high praises.
“Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable for horror fans, and we are excited to welcome him back to Blumhouse. I immediately responded to Mike’s new take on the world of The Exorcist and can’t wait for audiences to experience it,” Blum said at the time.
Flanagan himself previously teased what The Exorcist will feel like, at least in terms of tone. “This is an opportunity to do something that I believe has never been done within the franchise — something that honors what came before it but isn’t built on nostalgia,” Flanagan stated.
“I chased The Exorcist very aggressively because I was convinced I had something that I could add,” Flanagan continued. “I really just saw an opportunity to make the scariest movie I’ve ever made. I know expectations are high. No one’s more intimidated than I am.”
The Exorcist is currently slated to arrive in theaters on March 12, 2027.
