Arkansas rarely gets its proper recognition as a top travel destination in the American South. While other Southern states like Tennessee and North Carolina get acclaim for their incredible natural scenery, and South Carolina for its distinctive Southern charm, Arkansas’ Ozark beauty and small-town gems often get ignored. Yet Arkansas frequently surprises travelers with just how rich its attractions are.
Across the state, you can find destinations as diverse as the beautiful beach- and island-heavy “Maldives of Arkansas” at Lake Ouachita and Arkansas’ very own “Niagara Falls” of Hemmed-in-Hollow Falls — the tallest waterfall in the Ozarks. If you’re lucky, you might even discover a 3.81-carat diamond at Arkansas’ Crater of Diamonds State Park.
The lovely town of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, is the ideal combination of the state’s welcoming small-town warmth and its vibrant outdoor attractions. Located in the heart of the Ozarks just south of the Arkansas-Missouri border, Eureka Springs blossoms with the kind of community spirit that made American small towns so worthwhile in the first place.
Eureka Springs’ historic downtown exudes antique charms, while still offering plenty of modern comforts and boutique indulgence to fulfill all of your shopping needs. And though Eureka Springs has no shortage of family-friendly attractions, the town’s intricate shopping and dining options, diverse attractions, and welcoming culture place it among the best destinations for solo travelers in the American South.
The Loveliest, Friendliest, And Most Historic Town In Arkansas
Eureka Springs is relatively small as far as American towns go, with an estimated population of only a little over 2,000 permanent residents. Yet Eureka Springs packs quite a lot into that relatively small size, particularly in terms of a vibrant town center that matches (or even exceeds) what you’d find in many larger cities.
The town’s layout itself is quite distinctive. Situated as it is within the Ozarks, Eureka Springs features streets that wind up and down scenic hills and highlands in a manner more indicative of San Francisco than the South. The town’s unique layout and network of streets create a one-of-a-kind aesthetic that makes the town seem much bigger than it is.
Indeed, travelers have known that this scenic Ozark community has been a worthwhile destination for well over a century. Eureka Springs was a booming vacation spot back in the 19th Century. This historic prestige has left the town with an impressive corpus of Victorian-style buildings and historic landmarks that only enhance its picturesque Ozark profile. The entire Eureka Springs downtown area is even listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Eureka Springs is also well-known for its welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. In addition to being a top family-friendly and solo adult destination, Eureka Springs is consistently ranked as one of the most LGBTQ+-friendly cities in the South.
Enjoy Many Of Arkansas’ Top Small-Town Amenities
As a scenic haven in the Ozarks, Eureka Springs has long been recognized as a top vacation destination for families. Yet the town has plenty to offer adults and solo travelers as well. The Eureka Springs Downtown Historic District offers a treasure trove of amenities, shops, and dining options for solo adult travelers, including:
Eureka Springs’ art scene has plenty of top attractions for the solo adult traveler. The Museum of Eureka Springs Art is a wonderful gallery for the art-minded visitor to enjoy, featuring more than 400 Eureka Springs-focused works of art by around 150 different artists. If you’re a theater buff, Eureka Springs’ Melonlight Theater is a charming theater space that puts on original plays in a memorable and immersive format.
Historic downtown Eureka Springs is a great spot for an engaging walking tour of a lovely Southern small town. However, if your feet get tired, you can also hop on the Eureka Rocket for a relaxing and informative golf cart tour of the town’s many historic and cultural attractions. Or, if you’re a night owl, Eureka Springs has a surprisingly rich nightlife scene that solo travelers can enjoy, including nightclubs, comedy shows, and breweries.
Eureka Springs Is A Terrific Base Camp For Arkansas’ Best Outdoor Adventures
For its relatively small size, Eureka Springs has a plethora of cultural, historical, and recreational offerings for solo adult travelers. At the same time, however, Eureka Springs is also a terrific gateway to many of northern Arkansas’ best outdoor destinations.
The most notable outdoor attraction just outside of Eureka Springs is undoubtedly the heavenly Thorncrown Chapel. While states like Arkansas have no shortage of churches and religious spaces, few of them come close to forging Thorncrown Chapel’s unforgettable profile. Nestled in the enchanting Ozark forests outside of Eureka Springs, Thorncrown Chapel has a unique architectural design that is somehow both modern and rustic.
Using a complex interconnection of wood and glass, the chapel simultaneously complements the surrounding forest setting and stands out as a distinct architectural triumph. Since it opened in 1980, Thorncrown Chapel has been a major Eureka Springs attraction for both religious and non-religious visitors. And while the chapel makes a perfect place to visit and get some meditative spiritual peace (and photos), it’s also a great place for weddings.
If you prefer a more active outdoor adventure, Eureka Springs’ Ozark setting puts it within close range of many of Arkansas’s best outdoor recreational opportunities. The town itself sits in the middle of two different rivers and three lakes. As a result, visitors have plenty of opportunities for both hiking and boating without having to drive too far from town. Eureka Springs’ own Lake Leatherwood City Park offers state park-level beauty and outdoor fun within the city limits. And speaking of state parks, some of the best destinations in the Arkansas state park system are within a convenient drive of Eureka Springs.
Worthwhile destinations like Withrow Springs, Roaring River, and Hobbs State Park are all within 25 miles of the town. If you’re willing to make a slightly longer (though still convenient) drive from Eureka Springs, you can drive roughly 50 miles to the amazing Buffalo National River. As America’s first “national river” protected by the National Park Service, the Buffalo National River features 135 spectacular miles of the last remaining undammed rivers in the contiguous United States.
With superb opportunities for paddling, fishing, and hiking, the Buffalo National River might be the premier outdoor destination within the vicinity of Eureka Springs. And though the park is perfectly worthwhile as a national river, there’s a decent chance that the Buffalo National River could become America’s next national park in the near future. So, if you plan a visit to the Buffalo National River during your next trip to Eureka Springs, you’ll get to say that you experienced the river before it got full “national park” status.
