Holidaymakers have been sharing their views on Canary Islands destination Lanzarote, with some claiming they’ll “never go back”. An unlikely issue seems to be “putting them off”
Holidaymakers in the Canary Islands have been raising concerns recently as a particular issue appears to be catching them off guard. For weeks, visitors have been reporting difficulties in Tenerife, but attention has now shifted to Lanzarote as well.
Videos have spread across the internet showing people expressing their belief that the popular holiday destination is “done” due to an unlikely problem. One clip, shared on TikTok by Biggie Bills, sparked considerable debate, with many viewers agreeing that an unexpected factor is “putting them off” returning, as they made some rather significant travel confessions about the Canary Islands.
This follows separate concerns raised by tourists last month. Just weeks ago, holidaymakers in Tenerife flagged yet another issue of their own.
Biggie said: “This is why people are done with Lanzarote. The wind is constant. Face full of sand with your drink, but not everyone agrees.
“Some areas are calm. Dealbreaker or not?”
The video prompted considerable discussion, attracting hundreds of comments. It appears viewers hold very strong opinions on the holiday destination, with some stating they “won’t go back”.
One person said: “It’s like being stranded on the moon, but with a very small town on there, with hardly anything to do.” Another added: “Gone too expensive.”
A third replied: “Too expensive now, the airport is a joke, the wind was insane in Costa Teguise when I was last there, and I feel the place is feeling run down.”
Meanwhile, a fourth commented: “Weather unpredictable. After years of coming, we won’t be returning after three holidays of s*** weather.”
One more also noted: “Went last week. Between the new system at the airport, terrible weather [and] prices are so high. Puts me off going back.”
Not everyone agreed though, as other holidaymakers admitted they adore visiting the destination. Someone wrote: “I was there last year. The best Canary Island. Will be going back.”
Another noted: “Done? We’re getting busier by the year, as is all of our businesses.”
A third said: “Best place ever. Clean, friendly and stunning. Going back in July. Can’t wait.”
One more also stated: “If you don’t like it, don’t go. Lanzarote is our favourite holiday destination. The wind does not put us off.”
What people need to know
Lanzarote is widely regarded as an extremely popular year-round tourist destination, particularly for Europeans in search of warm weather. It is considered one of the top Canary Islands, renowned for its distinctive volcanic landscapes, beaches and artistic, stylish atmosphere.
However, the weather there is also rather windy, and this has been extensively documented. Lanzarote is generally a very windy island, with an almost constant breeze.
Trade winds are prevalent, making it a favoured spot for water sports. Typically, the wind is at its strongest from late May to early September, and this appears to be deterring some visitors of late. In terms of cost, the destination is broadly considered to be reasonably priced compared to the UK and Northern Europe; however, prices have increased in recent times.
While it still represents good value for money, visitors should anticipate higher costs for dining out and accommodation than before 2020. Specific areas such as Playa Blanca and Puerto del Carmen in particular have been reported to have become increasingly expensive.
