Amkor Technology is expanding its $7 billion plant in Peoria from 104 acres to 171 acres following a land purchase last week.
It’s the first major development to take shape in the planned economic development hub known as the Peoria Innovation Core.
Two years ago, the city of Peoria acquired rights to develop 7,341 acres of State Trust Land along the Loop 303 corridor, between Lone Mountain Parkway and State Route 74. Peoria’s economic development services director Maria Laughner says the primary goal of the planned community district is to increase local employment.
“We will work with developers and businesses that want to come in, as long as they are trying to bring in users, or they are themselves users that will create a minimum of 10 jobs per acre,” Laughner said.
Amkor, which has been headquartered in Arizona since 2005, designs, packages and tests semiconductors for other companies. It broke ground on its Peoria factory in October, becoming yet another cornerstone of the Valley’s growing semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem — which includes TSMC a few miles east of the innovation core in north Phoenix and Intel’s operations in Chandler.
Amkor says the facility’s expansion will bring 3,000 high-paying jobs to the area. Production is slated to begin in 2028.
