Destin Daniel Cretton could be ready to make a splash with Hawaii Five-O.
The filmmaker, who is coming off the record-breaking success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, is developing a feature take on the classic television property at Paramount Pictures, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed.
Still in early stages, this potential big-screen package has set Chris Bremner (Bad Boys: Ride or Die) and Noah Oppenheim (Jackie) to pen the screenplay. Guymon Casady is producing and spearheaded the project with the estate of original series creator Leonard Freeman.
Hawaii Five-O debuted on CBS in 1968 and ran for 12 seasons, with the police drama starring Jack Lord as Detective Captain Steve McGarrett as he solved crimes in Hawaii. Freeman created the series that was known for the lead character’s catchphrase, “Book ’em, Danno.”
CBS rebooted the property with Hawaii Five-0, a police procedural starring Alex O’Loughlin as Lieutenant Commander Steve McGarrett and Scott Caan as Detective Sergeant Danny Williams, aka Danno. Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park were also original castmembers on the series that debuted in 2010 and ran for 10 seasons. Prior to the reboot’s launch, there had been efforts in the 1990s and early 2000s to develop a big-screen version, but they stalled out amid battles surrounding the rights.
Cretton, also known for helming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is next set to direct the live-action Naruto movie for Lionsgate. THR previously reported that Charles Melton was in talks for a key role.
The filmmaker, who grew up on the Hawaiian island of Maui, was behind this year’s crowning box office achievement, having directed the spectacularly successful Spider-Man: Brand New Day for Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios. Tom Holland reprises his role as the titular web-slinger for the movie that has led the domestic box office for the past six weekends and is just shy of becoming the highest-grossing title on the all-time North American chart.
