Starring Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman, Practical Magic 2 returns to the world of the Owens sisters, where ancestral magic and a long-standing family curse once again threaten to upend their lives.
Set 25 years after the first film, Practical Magic 2 finds the Owens family facing a new crisis when revelations about their history and the origins of their magic come to light. When Sally’s (Sandra Bullock) daughter Kylie (Joey King) begins uncovering long-hidden family secrets and developing mysterious abilities of her own, the family is drawn into a multigenerational struggle to finally break the curse that has haunted the Owens women for centuries.
Sally (Sandra Bullock) and Gillian (Nicole Kidman) reunite with their aunts, Jet (Dianne Wiest) and Franny (Stockard Channing), as the Owens sisters travel from Massachusetts to the United Kingdom to confront the source of their magic. Together, they must find a way to end the curse and protect the next generation of their family.

When we meet the Owens sisters all these years later, they are living very different lives. Gillian is still the free spirit of the two and lives life to the fullest, even though she knows she can’t fall in love, knowing full well that it would result in tragedy. After the death of her second husband, Sally has decided to raise her daughters, Kylie and Antonia (Maisie Williams), without any memory of magic or knowledge of the family curse. She might think this decision is for the best, but the reality is that it’s going to come back and bite her in the tuchas eventually. Which it does when Kylie admits she loves Gideon (Xolo Maridueña).
I admit to being curious about what direction they would take Practical Magic 2 after returning to this world so many years later. After all, there’s only so many things you can do with the general premise of a cursed family that can’t fall in love without tragedy happening. Lo and behold, they found a way to go about it—one that requires going back to where the curse started many generations before in England. Otherwise, they would have found themselves repeating all the same beats from before, and it wouldn’t justify the existence of the sequel.
Practical Magic 2 does what it needs to do to justify its existence as a movie. You can’t ask much more than this. The Owens sisters and their aunts are back in action, but if anything, a runtime over two hours probably wasn’t necessary. Couldn’t they have tightened it just a little bit? The first film was only 104 minutes! But really, the reason this film even exists at all is because Practical Magic grew a cult following and the fans demanded a sequel.

What impressed me is how they completely rebuilt the home from scratch for Practical Magic 2. This might be the most impressive thing about the entire film. Years ago, they filmed the exteriors in one place, and the interiors were built on a soundstage. Here, they chose to go with a practical set for the first floor, where one is able to walk both inside and outside.
Practical Magic 2 doesn’t quite recapture the magic of the original. There are enough new ideas here to justify the sequel, and it’s genuinely nice to see Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman back together as Sally and Gillian. At the same time, the overlong runtime holds the film back from being as enjoyable as it could be. Fans of the original might find something to enjoy here, but Practical Magic 2 ultimately falls short of the magic it is trying to recreate.
