ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR has stepped up efforts to diversify its tourism sector during the first 100 days of the government’s second phase, focusing on new products and international visibility.
Acting Minister for Tourism and Heritage, Mr Mudrik Ramadhan Soraga, said the government is expanding tourism offerings beyond traditional beach tourism to include conference, festival, sports and medical tourism.
Speaking to journalists in Zanzibar yesterday, Mr Soraga said the move is aimed at strengthening the sector’s contribution to the economy while enhancing its resilience. He further said that tourism remains a key pillar of Zanzibar’s economy, contributing over 30 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and supporting more than 65,000 jobs.
“The government continues to prioritise sustainable tourism, improved service quality and greater community participation to ensure the sector benefits more people,” he said.

Mr Soraga said efforts to promote Zanzibar internationally have also been intensified, with participation in major global tourism events such as the International Tourism Fair (FITUR) in Spain and the World Travel Market in London. He said the increased international presence is helping to position Zanzibar as a competitive destination in the global tourism market.
At the local level, the government has continued to support cultural and tourism-related events, including the Sauti za Busara festival, as part of efforts to promote heritage and attract more visitors.
“These initiatives are aimed at increasing visibility and attracting diverse groups of tourists while supporting local communities,” he said.
Mr Soraga added that the government is committed to building a more inclusive and sustainable tourism sector that contributes to economic growth and improved livelihoods. He said the focus is also on ensuring that tourism development aligns with the ruling party’s 2025–2030 manifesto and broader national development priorities.
The government’s strategy includes strengthening infrastructure, improving services and encouraging investment in new tourism products to meet changing global demand. As Zanzibar continues to diversify its tourism sector, officials say the focus will remain on expanding opportunities while maintaining the island’s cultural and environmental integrity
