Friends of Library open up space for bigger Vernon book sale
Published 8:00 am Monday, April 20, 2026
For nearly 40 years, Friends of the Library have been recycling books to boost literacy in the community. And they’re back at it, April 30 to May 2 bringing “the best book sale in the Okanagan” to the Schubert Centre.
“The response last May was so overwhelming that the venue quickly became crowded and hot, so the Friends of the Library (FOL) have rethought the sale, rented one more room, and will separate the young adult, junior, and children’s books from the adult choices,” said Linda Wills. “The extra space will make it much easier for customers to locate their special books from amongst the tremendous choice on offer.”
In addition to the large selection of books for sale, there will be some for free, including language titles.
“The Okanagan Regional Library has been clearing its shelves of foreign language books and the FOL now has a collection of Spanish, Chinese, Dutch, Punjabi, and Norwegian books. After some discussion, a decision was made to offer these books for free.”
Customers are asked to remove free books from the building before buying regular sale books to ensure they aren’t charged for their free books.
There will also be special books segregated on the stage area. These are books the FOL feels are worth more than the regular charge of $2. They will be priced at $3, $5, $10, and $25 each.
Proceeds from the book sales go to fund non-budget items for our local library and the regional library.
Past purchases have included decorations for the children’s department, honorariums for speakers and entertainers, plants, Christmas decorations, and the new Makerspace which includes a 3D printer, Cricut, digitization stations, and an audio recording station among other items.
Daycares and kindergartens are welcome to drop by the sale at 4 p.m. on Saturday to pick up children’s books at no charge (just bring your own boxes).
The FOL book sales aren’t just popular among locals, people come from out of town to take in “the best book sale in the Okanagan.”
A recent Kamloops shopper said: “Thanks to you and your colleagues for pulling together such an incredible event! It’s the best used book sale in British Columbia! Others like Vancouver and Kelowna don’t even come close.”
The sale runs Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Prices are $2 each for adult books and $1 each for young adult, junior, and children’s books.
