Not many films strike the perfect balance between comedy and heart-wrenching drama but the 2000s hit Little Miss Sunshine is one of those rare exceptions. Following a family as they set out on a road trip to enter Olive in the final round of a beauty pageant, it’s familial dysfunction at its best.
But what happened to the on-screen family once the cameras stopped rolling? Find out what they’ve gotten up to in the two decades since the Hoover family loaded up into that iconic VW campervan.
Abigail starred as Olive Hoover in ‘Little Miss Sunshine’
Abigail Breslin
Abigail Breslin starred as Olive, the beauty pageant hopeful who sits at the heart of the Hoover family. Before her leading role, Abigail appeared in The Princess Diaries 2, Raising Helen and NCIS.
Following her work as the movie’s standout child star, Abigail worked alongside Ryan Reynolds in Definitely, Maybe (2008) and the Oscar-nominated actress is still acting today, with recent roles including credits on The Italians (2025) and I Killed Him in My Sleep (2026). She married crypto trader Ira Kunyansky in 2023.

Paul Dano
Paul Dano has only grown in fame since his role in Little Miss Sunshine. The actor has appeared in acclaimed hits like 12 Years a Slave and There Will Be Blood. He began dating his Ruby Sparks co-star Zoe Kazan in 2007, and the long-term partners share two children.
More recently, he’s worked on 2025 thriller The Wizard of the Kremlin and is set to appear in another road-trip feature, 2026 buddy comedy The Chaperones.

Alan Arkin
Oscar-winning actor Alan Arkin was best known for his performances in films like Argo (2012), Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) and Edward Scissorhands (1990). Over almost 70 years of work on-screen, he won a BAFTA, Golden Globe, Oscar and Tony Award.
He said ‘I do’ for the third time in 1996, wedding Suzanne Newlander Arkin and remained married to the actress until his death in 2023 at 89 years old.

Toni Collette
The Muriel’s Wedding star and Oscar nominee appeared as family matriarch Sheryl in Little Miss Sunshine but has also found success as a singer-songwriter with tracks like This Moment is Golden.
Toni’s best-known projects include Hugh Grant feature About a Boy, The Sixth Sense and Hereditary. She tied the knot with drummer Dave Galafassi in 2003, welcoming children Sage and Arlo before their split in 2022.

Steve Carell
Best recognised as The Office boss Michael Scott, Steve Carell appears as Uncle Frank in Little Miss Sunshine. He’s starred in comedies like The 40 Year-Old Virgin, 2015 satire The Big Short and rom-com Crazy, Stupid, Love.
He recently appeared in the TV comedy Rooster (2026) and the HBO Max film Mountainhead (2025). Steve is married to actress and comedian Nancy Carell, whom he wed in 1995. They share two children together, daughter Elisabeth and son John.

Greg Kinnear
Greg Kinnear has appeared in some iconic romantic favourites, from Sabrina (1995) to You’ve Got Mail (1998), The Last Song (2010) and As Good As It Gets (1997). In 2006, he starred as the Hoover family father Richard.
Since then, Greg has remained consistently busy on-screen. He recently appeared in the 2026 Apple TV+ series Margo’s Got Money Troubles, worked on Netflix’s You in 2023, and starred in the 2014 comedy Rake.

Bryan Cranston
Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston is a household name and perhaps the most well-known of his Little Miss Sunshine counterparts. He’s also worked on projects like Malcolm in the Middle, Better Call Saul and starred in 2020 thriller Your Honor.
Bryan tied the knot for the second time in 1989, wedding Magnum, P.I. actress Robin Dearden. In 1993, they welcomed daughter Taylor Dearden who stars in acclaimed HBO series The Pitt.
