With the arrival of Starbucks’ pumpkin spice latte and Halloween decorations taking up just about every shelf in HomeGoods, fall is just around the corner. What better way to celebrate the changing of the seasons than with a few good movies? So, without further ado, here is the list of some of the best movies to kickstart your fall adventures.
- “Remember the Titans”
A fall staple that combines football, drama and romance, all while demonstrating a key point in history. The story is loosely based on Herman Boone, who was a high school football coach in Virginia. The high school team is forced to integrate during a time of segregation and Boone takes charge, helping his team work through their differences and become a united front. Through rigorous work and training, the team unites and overcomes something far greater than any football game. The nostalgia of high school football brings all the fall feels and a deeply emotional story about change in every form.
- “Good Will Hunting”
This movie is set in South Boston, where the main characters Will, Chuckie, Billy and Morgan live. Will Hunting, played by Matt Damon, is a janitor and his life is forever changed when he miraculously solves a rigorous math problem anonymously while working at MIT as a parolee.
Once Hunting is caught, instead of serving jail time, he is given the choice to study math under a professor’s watch and attend therapy. Robin Williams plays Sean Maguire, the therapist, and the dialogue between Hunting and Maguire shares great words of advice and wisdom. “Good Will Hunting” portrays the journey of the less fortunate and what happens when you take a chance. From New England in the fall to Boston accents, “Good Will Hunting” is the perfect fall feature film.
- “Dead Poets Society”
A classic film with big-name actors like Robin Williams, Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard. The story takes place at an all-boys boarding school in New England, showcasing timeless fall scenery and architecture. Williams plays the English professor at the school and attempts to alter the boys’ perspective about poetry and the impact it can have on one’s life. Because of the professor’s teaching style and words of wisdom, the boys’ lives are forever changed by the end of the movie.
- “Planes, Trains and Automobiles”
John Candy has been in countless comedies over the years, but this heartfelt, funny and seasonal movie about a man trying to get home to his family for Thanksgiving is the perfect fall staple. Steve Martin plays Neal Page, who is the main character taking planes, trains and automobiles to reach his family in time for the big day.
Page meets Del Griffith (John Candy) on his first attempt at getting home and from then on, the two mistakenly spend the rest of their journey home together. The movie is full of laughs, great one-liners and even a few moments that might make you cry. But nothing says fall quite like Thanksgiving.
- “It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown”
If you’re looking for a more nostalgic film that isn’t quite as long as a traditional movie, Charlie Brown is always a good choice. The cartoon-style film is reminiscent of childhood, and the soft music and comforting dialogue are the perfect cozy fall combination. The Peanuts get together to celebrate Halloween and Linus waits for the Great Pumpkin. Cozy fall pictures, familiar characters and a shorter play time make this film a perfect introduction to fall.
