A found-footage film and another example of fungal horror have invaded the top horror movies streaming this week. There are no fewer than four new movies on the list this week that are also films from the past, reaching out to scare new viewers. There are four films that have never been on this list which have surged to the forefront out of nowhere in the lead-up to scary season. Some are decades old and beloved classics; others are cult films that horror fans love to recommend to each other.
The most recent scary movie new to the top ten is Ben Wheatley’s In the Earth, released in 2021; it is only five years old and a direct product of the pandemic that was shot in a little over two weeks. James Cameron’s Aliens, a beloved action-horror monster movie that fans still quote, is forty years old and was released in 1986. The brutal cult film Eden Lake has also leaped into the fray and is notable for being the film that unleashed Jack O’Connell, in his second screen role, who is now celebrated as an actor known for playing charismatic villains.
Finally, M. Night Shyamalan’s found-footage comeback movie from 2011, The Visit, has reappeared to shock anyone who hasn’t already seen it and is worthy of a rewatch, as many home viewers have decided in the last week. It’s been eleven years, and the comedic touches and the rap song from the film may be among The Visit‘s biggest surprises.
