Sylvester Stallone is pushing Amazon to allow him to recut one movie to make it “acceptable.” The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 star has described the project as “a thorn in my side”.
Stallone wishes to recut the most divisive entry in the franchise, Rocky V. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter earlier this week, Stallone blamed himself for Rocky V’s failure, believing that his being in the director’s chair would have made a difference.
Regarding his push to recut the movie, he said, “It bothers me to death because I know I took my foot off the gas. I should have been more aware of not trying to be cool to the audience.” Although he was aware that a recut of the movie would not radically change its quality, he joked, “It’s not going to be great. It’ll be acceptable.”
Why is Rocky V so divisive among fans and critics?
Rocky V sits at 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, the franchise-low score. It was directed by John G. Avildsen, who directed the highly acclaimed first movie in the franchise. Stallone directed the next three installments of the movie, taking a step back for Rocky V.

Rocky V set out to capture the charm and grit of the original movie, stripping Rocky of his fame and fortune and making him start from scratch. However, the attempt was so blatantly transparent that it broke any immersion the movie could have had. Further, according to critics, the movie was plagued by bad characterization, plot conveniences, and a severely lacking storyline. For example, Rocky conveniently lost all his money due to bad investments by his accountant after Paulie ignorantly signed over a power of attorney.
Rocky V also suffered from a villain problem. Previous Rocky movies followed a simple formula- there was one villain, and he was developed over the course of the movie to fight Rocky as part of the climax. This was thrown out to introduce villains with more complex motivations. However, having two villains, Tommy Gunn and George Washington Duke, meant that each character only had half the story to develop properly, which they failed to achieve.
