Sylvester Stallone Is Officially in Talks With Amazon to Give One of His Classic Movies a Director’s Cut

For decades, Sylvester Stallone has reigned as one of Hollywood’s ultimate heavyweights, carving his name into movie history by bringing some of cinema’s most enduring icons to the screen. While audiences worldwide revere him for bringing heavy-hitting blockbusters to life, from the explosive warfare of the Rambo series to the adrenaline-fueled action spectacles of The Expendables, it is his legendary, Academy Award-winning Rocky franchise that remains his most deeply personal creation. He has spent years fiercely protecting the sports saga, and now he is attempting to perfect it and further cement its legacy.

When Stallone wrote the script for the original 1976 classic, he was a relatively unknown actor with practically no money to his name. He faced a tumultuous battle to secure funding for the film, but he ultimately won the fight and laid the foundation for a sprawling franchise of sequels and spin-offs, including the critically acclaimed Creed movies. During a recent SiriusXM Front Row interview with Andy Cohen, the movie legend revealed that he is officially in talks with Amazon to recut the widely maligned 1990 film. Rocky V was famously directed by John G. Avildsen, who had previously won an Oscar for helming the original Rocky before Stallone took the reins on the next three installments. “I’ve been talking to Amazon. I said, ‘Please give me three weeks. I want to recut that movie,'” he revealed, asserting that he is “100%” confident he could significantly improve its quality.

The critical lashing the movie received remains a prominent stain on the franchise’s history. Currently sitting at an all-time franchise low of 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, Rocky V was widely panned for its contrived plot line – which saw Rocky lose his fortune overnight due to a shady accountant – and a controversial street fight climax that left audiences feeling detached. If Amazon grants Stallone permission to revisit the film, he plans to work with an archivist to retrieve the original material, overhaul the movie’s hip-hop soundtrack (which also drew heavy backlash), and restore more of composer Bill Conti’s classic orchestral score.

Whether Stallone receives an official greenlight to move forward with his redemptive cut still remains to be seen, but audiences won’t have long to wait for another dose of franchise nostalgia. The biographical drama I Play Rocky is scheduled for a wide release on Nov. 20, 2026, following a limited theatrical run on Nov. 6, 2026, strategically timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the original film. Directed by Oscar-winner Peter Farrelly and starring Anthony Ippolito as a young, struggling Stallone, the biopic tells the electrifying true story of how an unknown actor risked everything on Rocky, refusing a massive payout for his script unless he was cast in the lead role. The forthcoming look back at the franchise’s legendary origins serves as a fitting reminder of the fighting spirit that started it all and continues to keep it alive five decades later.
