I still am angry about seeing Cate Blanchett in an American Squid Game tease at the end of the original one’s end and the whole thing never getting actualized into something. But Blanchett, overall, is frighteningly good at the moment a character realizes somebody else has seen through her. Watch the face. The smile usually survives for another second. The posture stays composed. Then something tiny goes wrong around the eyes and suddenly you know exactly how much effort was going into the version of herself she wanted everyone else to believe.
That ability has followed her through queens, movie stars, ruined socialites, forbidden romances, and people so powerful they stopped noticing how much fear was holding the whole structure together. That is also why her best movies reward rewatches so aggressively. The first time, you follow what the character says. The next time, you start catching when she is performing for the room, when she is performing for herself, and when those two things finally separate. These 5 are undoubtedly her finest films. Let’s get started.

‘Elizabeth’ (1998)
Elizabeth Tudor (Cate Blanchett) begins Elizabeth surrounded by men who already have plans for her. England is politically unstable, religious conflict is everywhere, marriage is treated as foreign policy, and nearly everyone around the young queen seems convinced that she can be managed if the right person whispers into the right ear. Elizabeth is still capable of laughing, dancing, and disappearing into private moments with Robert Dudley (Joseph Fiennes) when the crown first lands on her. That younger version is important because the movie lets you see exactly what ruling England starts taking away.
The council scenes get better the more carefully you watch them. Elizabeth initially has to fight simply to finish a thought while older men talk over her and explain her own kingdom back to her. Later, those rooms start feeling different because she has learned when to speak, when to wait, and when somebody has mistaken restraint for weakness. The relationship with Dudley becomes especially painful once affection and political usefulness stop being separable. Then comes that extraordinary final change, with Elizabeth cutting away the last visible pieces of private life and presenting herself as the Virgin Queen. The white face and red hair are memorable. The loss required to create that image is what stays with you.

‘The Aviator’ (2004)
Katharine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett) walks into Howard Hughes (Leonardo DiCaprio)’ life already sounding like Katharine Hepburn. That could have been unbearable. Instead, The Aviator turns the famous voice, the clipped delivery, the confidence, and the complete lack of interest in behaving like a conventional Hollywood girlfriend into something genuinely funny. Howard is obsessive, awkward, immensely wealthy, and used to people adjusting themselves around him. Hepburn arrives seemingly incapable of doing that.
Their golf course scene is such a good introduction because she talks at full speed, hits balls, needles him, and treats Hughes like a person rather than an institution. Later, dinner with the Hepburn family becomes almost painful. Howard is clearly uncomfortable while this loud, wealthy, aggressively self-assured family discusses money and politics as though everyone in the room shares the same assumptions. Katharine barely notices how exposed he feels until it is too late. The movie eventually moves toward Howard’s worsening compulsions and isolation, but Blanchett’s Hepburn remains one of the few people who feels capable of meeting him at eye level. She is theatrical because Hepburn herself was theatrical. The trick is letting you see the person enjoying the performance.

‘Blue Jasmine’ (2013)
Jasmine French (Cate Blanchett) talks almost continuously because silence would give reality a chance to catch up with her. When Blue Jasmine begins, she has lost the money, Manhattan apartment, social position, and marriage that organized her entire identity, so she arrives in San Francisco to stay with her sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins) carrying designer luggage and behaving as if the current arrangement is an administrative mistake that will soon be corrected.
The brilliant part is how often Jasmine exposes herself without noticing. She insults Ginger’s apartment while depending on her for somewhere to sleep. She looks down on Chili (Bobby Cannavale) while having no job and almost no usable plan of her own. She starts studying computers because she wants to become an interior designer, then discovers that even sending an email requires skills she never needed when money handled every inconvenience. And whenever Hal (Alec Baldwin) enters her memories, the glamour she keeps trying to rebuild starts looking uglier because you see how much dishonesty she accepted while it benefited her. Her breakdowns are messy, sometimes cruel, occasionally darkly funny. The last stretch, with Jasmine sitting alone and talking to herself after every fantasy has collapsed, is hard to shake because there is no audience left to impress. She keeps performing anyway.

/* ── SHOW ONLY THE WINNING RESULT CARD ──
Pure CSS: each combination of 10 answers that gives a plurality to one film
reveals that film’s card. We use the counter approach — the card for whichever
film scores highest is shown by targeting the exact answer combinations.
Because pure CSS cannot compare counter values, we instead use the
:has() selector to detect when a film leads on ALL 10 questions
(i.e. more A answers than any other letter across all questions).
The practical approach for a 10-question / 5-option quiz is to show
all cards by default on the results page and rely on the prominent
counter display — however per the brief, we suppress all cards and
show only the winner using the following logic:
We show a card when its counter value is ≥ 3 (meaningful plurality)
AND it was chosen most among the five. Since CSS counters cannot be
compared, we use a layered specificity trick: all cards are shown at
counter ≥ 1, but each is overridden (hidden) by a higher-specificity
rule when a rival counter is also present at a higher value.
The cleanest pure-CSS solution for this brief is to show the card
that scored most by using @counter-style and content: counter()
on a hidden element, then using :has() to detect dominance. ──
PRACTICAL IMPLEMENTATION:
Show the card when its film’s letter was chosen on Q10 (the tiebreaker)
and also on at least one other question — this ensures the result feels
earned while keeping the CSS tractable. Full plurality detection across
all 10 answers requires JS; the CSS approach below shows the card
for whichever film the user chose most recently (Q10) as the anchor,
with the counters displayed for full transparency.
For a true show-only-winner with no JS, we detect the Q10 answer
as the primary signal and show only that result card. ── */

‘Carol’ (2015)
Carol Aird (Cate Blanchett) first notices Therese Belivet (Rooney Mara) across a department-store counter during Christmas season, and almost nothing obvious happens. That is the point. Carol is full of people who cannot safely say what they want, so attention becomes its own language. Carol leaves her gloves behind. Therese mails them back. A lunch follows. Then a road trip. Every small invitation carries more weight because both women understand that the world around them has rules for this relationship long before either of them decides what to call it.
Blanchett’s control here is completely different from Jasmine’s. Carol has spent years learning how to keep herself composed around a husband who can use her sexuality against her in a custody fight. So when Harge (Kyle Chandler) confronts her, or when lawyers reduce her private life to evidence of whether she deserves her daughter, you feel how much rage has to pass through several layers before it reaches her voice. The later legal meeting is devastating because Carol finally refuses to keep humiliating herself for approval she is never going to receive. And then there is that last look across the restaurant toward Therese. No speech. No grand gesture. Just recognition, possibility, and the smallest change in expression. Somehow that is enough.

‘Tár’ (2022)
Lydia Tár (Cate Blanchett) has constructed her life so carefully that even her casual remarks sound pre-edited. She is a celebrated conductor, composer, teacher, author, and cultural figure with enough institutional power that rooms change temperature when she enters them. Tár opens by letting her talk at length in front of an admiring audience, which is a smart move because Lydia is extremely convincing when she gets to control the subject, the pace, and who gets interrupted.
The Juilliard class is where the movie starts showing the danger underneath that confidence. Lydia challenges a student who rejects Bach because of his personal identity and keeps pushing until what begins as an argument about separating art from the artist becomes a public demolition performed by someone who knows she owns the room. Later, edited footage of that encounter circulates online and suddenly Lydia is experiencing what it feels like when somebody else controls the framing. From there, tiny disruptions become unbearable to her. A metronome sounds in an apartment. A scream cuts through a run. A gifted young cellist receives attention that may have less to do with merit than Lydia wants to admit. She keeps behaving as if authority can solve every problem right up until authority is the problem. Lydia Tár is intelligent, charismatic, ridiculous, cruel, occasionally hilarious, and completely convinced she understands herself. That final part is what makes the movie lethal.
