The future of Cambodia’s tourism is inseparable from the inflows of Chinese tourists and investors, a Cambodian official said on Thursday.
Cambodian Ministry of Tourism’s Secretary of State Prak Phannara said Cambodia is eager to see more Chinese tourists and investors as they are well-prepared to welcome their comeback after the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The growth of Chinese tourists is an important opportunity, not only to boost the development of the tourism industry but also to create investment opportunities in different sectors,” he said at the Cambodia-China Tourism Forum 2024 in north-western Siem Reap province.
“Cambodia and countries worldwide have considered China a strategic partner and the most important market for their economic growth and national development,” he added.
Phannara said tourism has contributed almost 13% to Cambodia’s gross domestic product (GDP), generating numerous direct and indirect jobs for locals.
He said during the first seven months of 2024, Cambodia received 3.75 million international tourists, a rise of 23.2%, of which, 460,000 were Chinese tourists, representing an increase of 45.7%.
China used to be the biggest source of international tourists to Cambodia in the pre-COVID-19 pandemic era, he said, adding that the Kingdom received 2.36 million Chinese tourists in 2019, accounting for 35.7% of the total international tourist arrivals.
In a bid to revitalise the Chinese tourism market to Cambodia, he said they have reintroduced the “China Ready” strategy and will organise several events throughout this year such as gastronomy, the culture of Buddhism, and a travel fair, among others.
Speaking at the forum, Siem Reap Provincial Deputy Governor Dy Rado said the province, home to the UNESCO-listed Angkor Archaeological Park, is ready to welcome more Chinese tourists.
“We need more Chinese tourists,” he said. “The growth of Chinese tourists is vital to help boost our tourism industry.”
Thourn Sinan, chairman of the Pacific Asia Travel Association Cambodia chapter, said the Chinese tourism market has played a pivotal role in Cambodia’s economic landscape, significantly boosting local businesses and creating numerous job opportunities.
“With its stunning temples, vibrant culture, and breath-taking landscapes, Cambodia has become a favoured destination for Chinese travellers seeking both adventure and cultural immersion,” he told Xinhua.
Sinan said that to attract more Chinese holidaymakers, Cambodia needs to enhance digital marketing strategies on popular Chinese platforms like WeChat and Weibo.
Crafting bespoke travel packages that highlight unique cultural experiences and culinary delights will surely resonate with them, he added.
“Additionally, streamlining visa processes and offering Mandarin-speaking guides can greatly enhance their travel experience, making Cambodia even more appealing,” he added.
Tourism is one of the four pillars supporting Cambodia’s economy, in addition to garment, footwear, and travel goods export, agriculture, and construction, and real estate.
According to the Ministry of Tourism, the nation received 5.45 million international tourists in 2023, generating a gross revenue of $3.08 billion. Xinhua
