The United Nations has invited Indonesia to share its National Strategy for Business and Human Rights on November 25, 2024, according to the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.
“Many countries are keen to hear about Indonesia’s strategy for business and human rights,” director general of human rights at the ministry, Dhahana Putra, informed.
Speaking at an online dialogue on “Formulating Human Rights-based Regulations Towards Golden Indonesia 2045,” which was followed from Jakarta, he underlined that the UN has repeatedly invited Indonesia to share the strategy.
He said that the national strategy encapsulates three main measures — comprehension- and capacity-building, formulation of regulations and policies, and the strengthening of recovery mechanisms for victims of human rights violations.
Putra expressed the belief that the implementation of human rights protection in business activities would benefit Indonesia’s business climate, considering that the global market is increasingly demanding that countries consider human rights in business practices.

To that end, he said, companies must pursue profits in tandem with efforts to guarantee the fulfillment of employees’ rights to leave, proper wages, and adequate rest.
“It is also equally important to pay attention to the protection of the environment from pollution,” he added.
Putra then affirmed that his side has been building synergy with relevant ministries and agencies to help companies adopt the human rights principles put forward in Presidential Regulation No.60 of 2023 concerning the National Strategy for Business and Human Rights.
The director general then alluded to the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), saying that the National Strategy for Business and Human Rights has been devised to anticipate the potential losses from the regulation.
“The implementation of the EUDR will potentially lead to a loss of Rp107 trillion (around US$7 billion) in income for Indonesia,” he noted.
