Jaipur: Although authorities of the city airport have plans to introduce services in the old Terminal-1 building of Jaipur Airport from Oct 27, Jaipur Development Authority (JDA) will not be able to complete the widening of the approach road to this terminal – known as the Airport Road – within the next month.
This means fliers travelling by international flights can apprehend traffic snarls and need to set out for the airport early.
Speaking to TOI, Mahendra Sharma, chief of enforcement wing of JDA, confirmed that in no way can JDA evict the encroachment on this road and hand it over to zone engineers to widen a stretch of around 2km of this road to 200-feet wide.
The road connects the Sanganer Puliya and Number 7 crossing on Mahal Road.
“We have been asked to remove the encroachment only recently. After handing over notices to the 85 encroachers, it was revealed that around 22 of the encroachers either have stay orders or have pending cases related to compensation. Out of these 22 encroachments, 15 are residential units. Now that we have to move court seeking eviction orders, the process will take some time,” said Sharma.
An official from the enforcement department added, forget Oct, there are doubts whether we can evict all encroachers to widen the stretch before the Rajasthan Summit scheduled in Dec.
Officials said a little over 2km of the 5km long Airport Road is very narrow as the civic body could not remove these 85 encroachments from this stage. Although during the time of the previous Ashok Gehlot govt it was decided that this terminal building would be thrown open during Oct this year, the deputy commissioner of zone 9 was sitting idle with this work for one year.
Around last month, when zone 9 officials initiated this process, it got further delayed because of the raid conducted by ACB. This 2-km stretch is so narrow that you may expect traffic snarls if the number of vehicles increases rapidly.
“To add, this road remains busy during the daytime. It is expected that most international flights will land or take off during late evening or night time. Engineers will have a tough time carrying out the widening work,” said a JDA official.
With Terminal 2 getting operational, the airport authority had shut down this terminal in 2012.
