Croatia has so much to offer, from stunning cities and beautiful islands, perfect for sunbathing and swimming in crystal clear waters. We found that the best way to experience all this – while living the high life – is on board a small luxury cruiser.
Our seven-day cruise began in the historic Croatian town of Split, aboard the MS My Wish, one of Cruise Croatia’s latest luxury cruisers in the Adriatic. At 153 feet long, it comfortably accommodates 36 passengers and a crew of nine. Our spacious double room featured large windows, a private balcony and a queen-sized bed.
After unpacking, we took a tour of the ship and discovered two sundecks and a shaded area on the top deck with comfy sofas and bucket chairs. There’s even a hot tub, big enough for four adults, offering stunning views of the scenery. A small library provides a retreat from the midday sun, and there’s a bright dining room and a bar, open until 11.30pm, ideal for a couple of nightcaps, reports OK!.

Life on board a Cruise Croatia ship
The week has a set schedule, but we never felt rushed or herded around. Our tour director Marko was always available to cater to our needs and ensure everything went smoothly.
Breakfast and lunch were shared affairs, with a small kitchen team of a chef and sous-chef whipping up cooked breakfasts and incredible three-course lunches using local produce. The menu was filled with fresh fish and salads, as well as traditional Croatian dishes. While we couldn’t select our own meals, all dietary needs were accommodated as long as the crew was informed in advance – they even served pasta and pizza for the kids. The quality of the food on board was top-notch, rivalling many of the restaurants we visited on land.

Each day struck the perfect balance. We woke up to sea views each morning as the boat set sail early. Our mornings were spent either cruising or stopping for a swim in secluded coves, with paddle boards, floats and even a speed boat available for water exploration.
We enjoyed lunch together on board, and by late afternoon we’d arrive at that night’s stop, just as the crowds from larger ships were departing. A few evening meals were included in the package, including a delightful welcome meal on the first night that allowed us to mingle with our fellow passengers, and a captain’s dinner later in the week featuring live music that really started the party!
At most stops, a tour guide would meet us, then the rest of the evening was ours to enjoy. Each night, we slept soundly in our air-conditioned cabin, lulled to sleep by the gentle sway of the Adriatic Sea.
The route
Split
Our holiday kicked off with a walking tour of the town of Split. Known for its appearances in Game Of Thrones, including fight scenes and as the home to Daenerys’ dragons, this ancient town is renowned for Diocletian’s Palace. The palace covers over half the old town and was built for Roman Emperor Diocletian. It’s an easy place to explore on foot and is less crowded than many other stops on our tour.

Trogir
We thoroughly enjoyed wandering through the narrow streets of this UNESCO-protected medieval town at our own pace. As one of the oldest settlements in Croatia, it’s situated on a tiny island that can be reached by bridges. For the most breathtaking views over the rooftops to the sea, take the steep climb up the bell tower of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo.
Hvar
Before reaching Hvar, we sailed past the famous Golden Horn Beach for some photo opportunities. We spent the night in Stari Grad, a charming harbour with relaxed bars and cafes. A short drive took us to Hvar town, a haven for hedonists looking to party all night – just make sure you’re back on the boat by 5.30am!
Pakleni Islands and Vis
The water here transitions from ink blue to jade and black. You can float in the picturesque waters or, for a thrilling experience, the ship’s speed boat will whisk you away to an abandoned submarine base. Vis is a chilled-out yachting community and remains largely undeveloped, making it the perfect setting for much of the filming of the movie Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
Korcula
This island’s stunning Old Town is designed in a fish bone-style grid, providing protection from harsh winter winds and creating cooling breezes. Sir Fitzroy Maclean, who is said to have inspired the character of James Bond, saved it from bombing during World War II, and his family still owns a property here. The city walls house fantastic restaurants, and there’s even a bar that can only be accessed by a stepladder.

Mljet National Park, Slano and Ston
Mljet National Park houses two large saltwater lakes surrounded by forests, cycle paths, free boats for transportation, and a few cafés. We explored the peaceful grounds of St Mary’s monastery before swimming, then headed to Slano for a boat trip to an oyster farm, complete with tasting.
Dubrovnik
Dubrovnik, another Game Of Thrones location (keep an eye out for ‘Cersei’s walk of shame’ route), is considered by many as the jewel of the Adriatic. Avoid the crowds in the labyrinth of side streets and climb the walls for the best views of the rooftops.
