What do Chinese books, Halloween books, and Christmas books have in common?
They are all discards from the regional library and the Vernon Friends of the Library have many, many boxes of each that will be offered at the next sale held Sept. 27 and 28 at their warehouse at 9908 Kalamalka Rd. The sale runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
“The seven boxes of Chinese books have been offered to the Chinese Cultural Centres in both Vancouver and Calgary, but neither centre has the room to store them,” said Linda Wills, Friend of the Library. “At this point, the Friends are looking for suggestions for their distribution.”
The boxes of children’s Christmas and Halloween books will be of interest to daycares and kindergartens.
Although the usual price for children’s books is $1 each, the Friends are willing to bargain if a larger volume is purchased.
As well as these three categories, the September sale is a donated book sale and the selection of donated books will be the usual categories found at sales.
All proceeds of book sales go towards non-budget items at the library.
Examples over the years included speakers’ honorariums, children’s department decorations and furniture, plants, Christmas decorations, and the Makerspace, a place to find audio and video recording, 3D printing, coding, robotics, electronics, and material cutting.
“The Vernon Friends of the Library considers its sales as one of the best recycling efforts in the North Okanagan,” said WIlls. “Both donated books and ORL discards find new homes with happy readers.”
