Linda Donlin, Bismarck, author and illustrator of “The Magic of Medora” books, will conduct booksignings in Jamestown at The Story Nook at its 10:30 a.m. storytime on Saturday, Sept. 28, and later that day in Oakes at Sweets ‘N Stories from 4 to 7 p.m.
The books were inspired by her granddaughter Ava’s curiosity about the historic town. Donlin couldn’t answer all her questions, so they went looking for a book that connected all the dots about the people who once lived there and how it became the state’s top tourist destination.
“We found many good books,” she said, “but none that put all the puzzle pieces together in a way that was easy to understand. So we decided to write one.”

With the support of the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation, Donlin enlisted the help of her nine grandchildren and embarked on a journey to research, write, illustrate and publish a book they called “The Magic of Medora.” It was released last August during an event at the Medora Musical, and this year they released a coloring and activity book of the same name.
“These books will leave a legacy in our family,” Linda’s granddaughter Madalyn said. “I’m glad I got to be part of it with my cousins, and I’ll always remember doing this with my grandma.”
The hardcover book is an easy-read historical book for middle school and above and is written in Theodore Roosevelt’s voice. It’s a complete guide to all things Medora from the geological formation of the Badlands through the boom and bust of Medora to its transformation into the state’s No. 1 tourist destination and future site of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library. The coloring and activity book has a similar storyline but is geared toward a younger audience.
Books are available in most stores in Medora, The Capital Gallery, Bismarck Art and Galleries Association and The Heritage Center in Bismarck, The Story Nook in Jamestown, Sweets ‘N Stories in Oakes, Ferguson Books in West Fargo; and online on
